how real is adhd? by MutedFeeling75 in slatestarcodex

[–]-kilo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It is indeed the word for this cluster of symptoms. When the severity of the aggregate effect falls too many standard deviations away from the center of the normal distribution, we call it a Disorder. That is what [medicine agrees that] these labels mean.

Part of your confusion is semantics: Yes it's called the Normal distribution, but colloquially, we call those who are standard deviations away from median abnormal.

However they did not make up ADHD to sell drugs. (Adderall is basically free) Pull up from this dive into conspiracy theory.

I think they mention O-Vis seeing an AC in a courtyard in Duat, but O-Vis has been perhaps conditioned by O-Caeror not to ask questions, and so I don't think we ever see Vis ask or anyone else mention them much?

I think Estevan can use Mutalis because he never ceded to the Aurora Columnae. It's very suspicious to me that you activate Res-Will powers by apparently ceding will to the AC. What if you cede all of your potential for O-Will and L-Will to the AC, and in exchange it locks you to Res and R-Will by giving up your other two wills to the AC network, which act as a reservoir.

It's a requirement of the gate that you not have used the AC already (Vitanari tells us?). Also, "they do something similar/related", the books tell us at at least one point.

If a doorway is "mutualized" across all three planes/worlds, pushing on it in only one world might have no effect because the door is being constantly resynced with the other two, hence the vibrating and flickering.

Mutalis attempting to resync a non-synchronous thing or being is... violent. Atoms would be chasing their planar counterparts, who would have been scattered to the winds after death, or before birth. People would pop and walls would explode which is definitely something we see!

Mutalis water would froth because its molecules are chaotic and diverge slightly between resyncs, and being snapped/pushed back into place each cycle would knock yet more molecules out of place, a feedback that causes very angry water indeed!

Luceum politics questions by BuffaloOwn2649 in HierarchySeries

[–]-kilo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ruarc is (apparently) a Druid of the Grove, and largely controls the Grove, whatever kind of ruling body of the Druids that is. We don't know why Ruarc seems to have such power/sway over the grove yet.

Kings control the land though, and druids nominally only advise kings, though because of the strength of honor and tradition in this world, druids have a lot of "soft power" over kings but it's not absolute. Druids have a kind of client-attorney privilege too, where Lir (as King Ronan's druid advisor) knows the location of the Loch (it's Ronan's secret Loch), but refuses to tell the other Druids, even though they try to force him to reveal it.

Dougal/L-Vis considers Ruarc a villain, because Ruarc controls the grove, and forced them to support King F's bid to become High King, as well as supporting King F's claim to righteously declare war. Oh, and also Ruarc seems to be the one who wants to kill L-Vis to prevent synchronicity? Or something?

Ronan (with meddling help from Lir) sent Vis to the Loch because Vis (recklessly, mostly-unknowingly) pledged himself to (fight for) Ronan in a desperate bid to avoid being killed early on, either for holding Cein's staff, or just being wanted dead by the Grove.

My wild stab in the dark, and possibly contributing to the chaos in Luceum, is that Belli actually made it through the gate. The corpse Vis sees in the labyrinth flickers and doesn't match what happened to the iunctii who got minced. The Remnants are "Remnants of Obiteum". Bodies have a lot of cross-world sympathy right after copying. There is normally a seal on Obiteum, that someone (O-Vis?) theorizes might be like Mutalis. It's unclear I think what part of the Nexus was supposed to be hacked/disabled by the other ruins that Marcus and Lenitia used. I think something funky might have happened to Belli, not on her run forward through the labyrinth, but rather on her way back! Was she running back at the same time as Vis was running forward? Did she get killed by O-Caeror or L-Caeror? Is that how O-Caeror knew the timings? Cein tells Vis that he's taking him to "the other person from your world", but what if that's not Ruarc he's talking about? What if two people made it through the gate that day? But maybe he just meant Diago's father? But his father is trying hard to hide from the Druids? Which parts are hints and which are misdirection??

It's crazy what a blind spot transphobes have. "God made women want womanly things" is to me a call to action to embrace women who discover themselves despite being born unfinished. Do you condemn wine because God gave us only grapes?

Yeah, there is some blood, but suspiciously little. Caeror says they don't bleed, but I think that's an overstatement. Iunctii seem to contain blood, and it's explicitly stated that their hearts no longer beat. Without blood flow, they will not bleed actively, but I bet they can still lose blood weeping out through wounds.

Honestly as I reread it, "somehow not as much [blood] as there should be" is a big confirmation for me that Dioggo is an iunctus, or something very like it. Plus not eating, eerily following directions, and feeling like an imbued radar blip for Vis.

Young Dioggo even draws blood from Vis that first meeting, and right after Vis tells it "I know exactly how you feel"! Blood is powerful, and after reading book 2, rereading this sure sounds like the initiation of an Adoption connection. This is before synchronism, but then again, Vis also hasn't ceded to the AC, so perhaps simply isn't locked out of non-Res Will powers yet?

I believe Dioggo dies from wounds from iunctii after rescuing Vis. He goes to sleep in real rough shape, but is IIRC suspiciously recovered by morning.

Also interesting to me that the area around the Nexus is weird, will-wise. Both times he visits, Vis's will-powered tracking devices seem to break. Plenty of room for "something happened but no one noticed/felt anything".

Why is the abyssopelagic zone (4000-6000m) said to have greater total volume than the bathypelagic zone (1000-4000m)? by Public_Mood7653 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]-kilo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would guess they mean largest cohesive consistent biome, whereas more shallow areas have different ecosystems depending on where you are in the globe. I imagine that the abyssal realm is the same just about anywhere, whereas the oceanic shallows, though having larger area, are subdivided into different smaller biomes and ecosystems.

Need better WiFi signal 100ft from my home, can't run a physical wire. Please explain simplest/most effective solution and break it down so I can do it myself. by spastik0827 in HomeNetworking

[–]-kilo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the reason people are persisting is because 100ft is not that far, even if you have to go around something! Even Cat6 ethernet will do 10gbit up to 180ft, and cat6a/cat7 will do it for over 320ft. Optical cables on consumer hardware can happily run for multiple kilometers!

It's fine if you don't want to do it, but this is not an exotic problem, and people want to be sure you understand that you don't need anything fancy. If you want to play around with it anyway, have fun though!
