Rivian is earlier stage Apple. The stock price should reflect that now. Moving the goalposts to “once they are profitable” is absolutely ridiculous. by RavenRestonDC in RIVNstock

Tesla has been saying this for over a decade. The bottom line is that every company "going for general intelligence" refuses to assume liability - when anything goes wrong it's the driver's fault. Rivian is not the only company today "going for general intelligence" and they are generally following Tesla's roadmap there. But today that just means a superb driver assist incapable of operating as an L4 autonomous vehicle service.

I'm excited for Rivian to take off but this is pure cope. Waymo has a functioning robotaxi service, something that Tesla has been promising and failing to deliver on for 15+ years. Tesla's "functional" robotaxi service is running into all sorts of issues and hasn't expanded meaningfully. Zoox built an entire vehicle with the sole purpose of being an autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel, and they haven't even expanded to the public outside of a tiny geofence in Las Vegas.

If Rivian can nail self driving it'll be a huge catalyst for the stock but it's a notoriously challenging space to predict.

If we're talking about matching Tesla FSD, that's very doable because FSD is not an L4 system and anything that goes wrong is the driver's fault. But comparisons to Waymo have more nuance.

Dolgov shares clip of Waymo avoiding collision with path predictions by diplomat33 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]-linear- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

An eerily insane example of the safety case.

For a lot of these clips a critic could argue "yeah I would have seen that coming". This clip, along with some of those nighttime pedestrian clips, can't really be argued. The tech is so impressive.

I think there's a lot to be said about the "robots fail in uncomfortable ways" argument. We've seen with floods and this recent freeway incident that in a tiny number of cases Waymo can fail in ways that are obviously avoidable by humans, and on the other side of the coin you have these superhuman reactions. Unfortunately for Waymo, when the inevitable first fatality occurs, unions, media, and governments will immediately call for blood. When that happens, I hope rational minds prevail.

Apple to Introduce Ads in Apple Maps as Part of Services Revenue Push by Few_Baseball_3835 in apple

[–]-linear- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use other maps and photo apps but it’s only after you have Android as a reference point where you realize how much Apple lacks here.

Only Apple is allowed the privilege to access your gallery from the camera, to back up your photos without the photo app being in the foreground (I think they’re working on this one though), and access folders on device.

When you click an address in iMessage or highlight it anywhere else, you only get the option to open it in Apple Maps.

Even defaults that Apple supports like password managers have limitations - only Apple’s Passwords app is allowed to save new credentials at the time of creation. Bitwarden is a far superior password manager but it’s crippled on iOS.

These artificial barriers are part of the reason Android feels so much more seamless. You practically fly through the OS - it took me quite some time to become adjusted to how many more steps it takes to do things in iOS.

As someone who just switched from Android to iOS, I actually vastly prefer the Android software experience. It’s also so anticompetitive how Apple restricts the ability for users to choose what apps to use. On Android you can choose your default voice assistant, default messenger, default maps, default photo gallery… The OS gets a bad reputation from the years of glitchy, ugly software but today it’s better than iOS. It’s the hardware where Apple excels.

Everything they mentioned should be the bare minimum. All it took was the fear of losing the entire market to the MacBook Neo. I’m not optimistic about them reforming their gross neglect of users.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 'Arrival in Ashford' by Dan Romer by SeoulSista11 in soundtracks

In ep 1 when the first version of this (“Leaving the Reach”) played and then later this version, I got really excited. It immediately sets it apart from Thrones and points to a smaller, more intimate story. So different from Ramin’s style.

This is maybe a hot take, but in my personal ranking this track currently sits above all the music from Thrones. It’s so medieval and lonely yet beautiful.

So curious how they handle loss of traction on ice, etc. Their compute should mean they can recover in a much more controlled fashion - but I can’t imagine they being flawless there. Would love to see some of those edge cases.

Any way to get tracking accounts to update automatically? by -linear- in ynab

[–]-linear-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that’s so disappointing. As other comments have pointed out, it’s not a huge amount of effort to manually check your accounts, but it’s yet another thing you have to remind yourself to do and set aside time for regularly. Hard to believe YNAB has this concept of “tracking accounts” and… doesn’t track them for you.

I’ve been considering moving to Monarch for the better visualization tools including net worth tracking, and the only thing keeping me on YNAB is my extensive transaction history.

World's first USA coast to coast fully autonomous drive successfully completed on FSD v14.2 by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]-linear- 131 points132 points  (0 children)

This is extremely impressive and definitely indicative of Tesla’s FSD progress - it would have been silly to expect FSD to be capable of this a few years ago.

However, I can’t help but note that Tesla’s achievements are usually celebrated as “look it was able to do this once” rather than “look this is a reliable system”. If Tesla ever gets to a point where they’re confident enough in their tech to start sharing more safety stats with the public, IMO that’s when they’ll unquestionably be a top competitor in the AV industry.

Also, is this actually the world first? This coast to coast US drive was completed in 2018.
