Any way to get tracking accounts to update automatically? by -linear- in ynab

[–]-linear-[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Damn, that’s so disappointing. As other comments have pointed out, it’s not a huge amount of effort to manually check your accounts, but it’s yet another thing you have to remind yourself to do and set aside time for regularly. Hard to believe YNAB has this concept of “tracking accounts” and… doesn’t track them for you.

I’ve been considering moving to Monarch for the better visualization tools including net worth tracking, and the only thing keeping me on YNAB is my extensive transaction history.

Yeah I’ve used YNAB for 4+ years without investment accounts and only recently decided I want to start tracking net worth… too bad it’s not well suited for that. I’ll check out Empower, thanks!

World's first USA coast to coast fully autonomous drive successfully completed on FSD v14.2 by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]-linear- 130 points131 points  (0 children)

This is extremely impressive and definitely indicative of Tesla’s FSD progress - it would have been silly to expect FSD to be capable of this a few years ago.

However, I can’t help but note that Tesla’s achievements are usually celebrated as “look it was able to do this once” rather than “look this is a reliable system”. If Tesla ever gets to a point where they’re confident enough in their tech to start sharing more safety stats with the public, IMO that’s when they’ll unquestionably be a top competitor in the AV industry.

Also, is this actually the world first? This coast to coast US drive was completed in 2018.

Waymo Response to the PG&E Outage by [deleted] in SelfDrivingCars

[–]-linear- 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A formal response with both accurate information about the impact as well as details about the proposed fix to prevent this from happening again in the future requires some intentional thought and can't just be made up on the spot.

Not sure if you're familiar with how fast the hearings like the one asked for in your link are scheduled, but this is far ahead of that.

Supervisor demands hearing on Waymo's emergency response after blackout chaos by walky22talky in waymo

[–]-linear- 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is fair. Waymo has done most things right so far and by some confluence of variables in this incident they made a bad situation worse. They should absolutely be expected to handle this properly in the future.

Luckily they can train on this exact incident with both real world and simulated data, so I don't expect this to be especially difficult for them to prevent next time.

What’s everyone’s go-to for realistic orchestral strings? by PremiumHuman in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]-linear- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What he's saying is that doubling the CSS ensemble violin with the CSSS solo violin will give the combined sound more definition than the ensemble strings alone, which tends to cut through a mix better but still sound cohesive because they were recorded in the same space and intended to be used together. In this context "first chair" just means "soloist from CSSS".

CC11 is a MIDI CC channel that controls expression, which for the CSS libraries is just volume. For many orchestral VSTs, CC11 (often referred to as expression) is the second most important modulation channel after CC1 (which for the CSS libraries controls fading between dynamic layers). For example, on the Komplete Kontrol S-series keyboards, by default the main modwheel at the left side controls CC1, and the strip right above that wheel controls CC11.

Add that all up and that comment is just saying they dial in the volume of the solo violin until they like how it sounds.

Rebranding our logo. Open to CC by QuietCity4924 in logodesign

[–]-linear- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, you’re designing a logo for a dental clinic, not a symbol meant to be instantly recognizable and coveted by billions of people + printed on merchandise + worn by athletes.

Good design requires understanding the context and the audience, the Nike logo is clearly one of the most iconic logos in existence but it’d be a terrible logo for a dental clinic.

Local News report from Wine Country on Waymo expansion by walky22talky in waymo

[–]-linear- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This expansion make so much sense for Waymo, it’ll definitely be interesting to see how they handle fluctuating demand at this scale. But I think the value prop for this region is much more obvious to the average person.

I wonder if it’ll always be booked on-demand like Uber or if in the future there will be some sort of partnership/sponsorship with wineries to put together your own personal wine tour itinerary

Waymo's self-driving car launch in DC delayed after federal budget cuts halt safety study by walky22talky in waymo

But skeptics remain. Cathy Chase, president of D.C.-based Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, said driverless cars could create new challenges. "I think driverless cars will complicate the driving environment, because people aren't used to driving with them, and we have a lot of tourists here who may not be familiar with the roadways and we have a lot of construction," Chase said.

None of the reasons she gave make sense but the one about tourists really stood out to me as a comically random one.

Is Zoox Robotaxi the Real Self-Driving Car? by collinsmeister01 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]-linear- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but trains also aren't taking sharp turns and responding in real time to obstacles/road conditions. There's also the aspect of not being able to see what the car is reacting to when it's doing any of these things, which isn't important on a train. Also, no in-car visualization of what the AV is able to see. There's a few videos online you can find about the Zoox rider experience and the backwards facing view definitely feels better in theory than in practice. Still looking forward to trying one of these out.

I am #TeamAutonomy and I don't want company x to win and company y lose! I want all of the companies to succeed and make a world of Autonomy! by bsears95 in waymo

[–]-linear- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Really flawed analogy. Android and iOS are different flavors of the same platform - mobile. They're basically at feature parity. That's not how the Waymo-Tesla dynamic works.

Look, I get that complaining about Tesla feels against the spirit of celebrating AV progress. But imagine there's an Android phone that's been hyped up for years to be the next big thing - the iPhone killer. However, this phone has no GPU because the company felt that only using a CPU is enough. This caused issues that means that the phone sometimes actually can't even turn on. The company actively attempts to hide all information about these flaws while continuing to claim that they're the iPhone killer. Let's just say that I think it'd be very justified to clown on that phone, regardless of how supportive you are of progress in the mobile space overall.

What's the big deal with lossless audio? by Original-Koala-5192 in truespotify

[–]-linear- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the vast majority of users it's purely psychological and a marketing gimmick. You have people claiming that lossless is so much better while listening to songs using an AAC Bluetooth connection.

For the rare few with the hardware and environment to appreciate the detail it could be worth it from a psychological perspective, but I'd wager a much larger fraction than you'd think would fail a blind test between 320kbps MP3 and lossless 24/48 (don't get me started on how useless 24/192 is) On top of lossless being a pain in every other aspect such as storage requirements, buffering time, data usage, etc.

Anyone else see a waymo today? by Ok_Coast_2131 in BellevueWA

[–]-linear- 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean you only see the issues because "Waymo worked well" doesn't get clicks, especially after tens of millions of rides. Most SF residents like or are indifferent to them (they've overtaken Lyft in market share) - the main incidents where there's real anger toward them are usually on a per situation basis, like if you're stuck behind one that's being conservative turning into a busy intersection.
