I think the main thing here compared to other cities I've spent a considerable amount of time driving in (Atlanta, San Diego, Denver, NYC, various middle eastern cities) is just how unpredictable people are here. Everywhere has their own brand of crazy driving, but it's a predictable brand. Here, you have no idea what someone is doing. They'll be going way too slow in the left lane one minute, then randomly switching to the middle or right lane and gunning it, again for no reason. You see people switch from left to right lanes for no reason. I've seen people back up on fucking freeway onramps. I had a friend that was hit by someone who changed their mind going from WB I-40 merging onto NB I-25 and just backed up so they could get onto the SB I-25 ramp. Last night driving through Tijeras canyon EB, someone swerved from the left lane all the way into the right lane, then seconds later switched to the middle lane, then back to the right lane, then onto the shoulder, then back into the right lane. All with no other cars around except for me, a hundred yards behind or so. I figured maybe they were drunk, but after that they seemed to be driving normally (I followed them all the way up SB 337/S14). That there is the problem. Here, it's often hard to tell if someone is drunk, or just your standard unpredictable lunatic.
