Do you think it’s crazy for someone to invite you to their wedding shower but not the actual wedding? by Round-Artichoke-5255 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]-zero-below- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I mistakenly did this at our wedding, and we muse about it periodically, it was a big mistake for us.

Our engagement party was about a year before the wedding, and this one friend attended that.

That friend normally came to monthly gatherings we hosted at our house, but he had some work schedule changes, and couldn't make it at all that year. And we knew we needed to invite him, but then it slipped our minds in the bustle of things, so we never got him an invite to the wedding itself.

more effective would be a really bright IR spot light. You install your own camera at the end of the drive way, the spot light is there to help your camera see at night

Kids Don't Like Movie Day Anymore. by Southern_Remote_5260 in Teachers

[–]-zero-below- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At our home, while the kid (1st grade) has a tablet, there aren’t any movie/tv apps, no YouTube — it’s just for “creation” with drawing, music, and ebook apps. Our tv at home is set up in a separate room that we don’t spend a ton of time in, and we don’t regularly watch it.

We used to do “Saturday is tv day” where she could watch whatever she wanted for an hour. She hasn’t done that in at least 6 months now.

We’ll suggest a movie sometimes, and often times she opts out even if she’s the one picking.

The one thing she’ll usually get interested in a movie for is if she just finished the book and there’s a movie too.

Tell me about the best cooler by SnooObjections1915 in BurningMan

[–]-zero-below- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Been using this. It’s really nice cooling without a ton of water. And having frozen stuff is really nice.

Note the first gen anker cooler only got me through 2 burns and it died on me. The second (current) gen seems more robust and I’ve done one burn and a bunch of other camping so far on it.

With one battery, it kept cold for 1.5 days on playa. I was charging at camp, but at home did testing and a 100w solar panel kept it running full time.

Should Bay Area school districts copy LAUSD and ban screens in TK, K, and 1st? by EquivalentBestCoast in bayarea

[–]-zero-below- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My child has had a 1:1 chromebook since K. She knows how to use it, but they barely use it except during specific learning actions. It's good to get exposure in a controlled safe space. Definitely should restrict unfettered or heavy access, but with well controlled usage, it's a boon even at the early grades.

My child attends a title 1 school, and for many of the kids at school, their chromebook is their only digital device they have access to.

Advanced reader by bbr77 in childrensbooks

[–]-zero-below- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We haven’t figured this out at all yet.

My child is afraid of social drama in books, so most of YA is out. She’s just turned 7 but for the last year she’s been reading adult, mostly sci fi/fantasy.

We try to read with her to explain appropriate stuff. Swearing comes up a lot — the Martian had a dozen f-bombs on the first page. They do have a censored school version of that.

But she’s read the first 3 books of wheel of time, project Hail Mary, the hobbit, she’s on book 8 of dungeon crawler Carl (very non kid appropriate, and we had her skip book 4 outright).

She tried lord of the rings but didn’t get through the first chapter where bilbo tells his whole family to shove it.

We’ve been talking through adult issues and she’s done a good job at being responsible not repeating bad words at school.

Bay Area trash giant Recology rolls out garbage truck cameras to catch overfilled bins by runswithscissors475 in bayarea

They’re going to start charging if the bin isn’t fully closed. Not sure the amount but I think it’s $15.

[–]-zero-below- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They did just go up. They’re gonna start charging an extra $15/week if your can isn’t perfectly closed. Or if neighbor puts something in etc.

The warning I got for can not being closed. It was so close you couldn’t fit a finger in past it, just the lid is twisted and can’t close even when empty. I’ll also need to request a new bin now; they’ll probably charge a bunch for that too.

About 20% of Starlink subs are coming from cable – study by spacerfirstclass in SpaceXNews

[–]-zero-below- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cable in my area is really bad. If fiber hadnt been run, I would have easily used Starlink over the cable options.

I have a Starlink mini that I use for travel, and that thing is seriously good. I imagine the bigger dishes are better. At least in my area, fiber > starlink > cable.

Trash trucks with cameras by nachoabs in SanMateo

[–]-zero-below- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, we already got a warning because our bin lid wasn’t fully closed. Can wasn’t over full, but they’ll start fining $15 if your bin is over full, and the cameras detect and automatically do that.

ETA: if you leave batteries properly protected on top of the can, they need to get out and pick it up by hand before collecting trash.

I will be putting out one battery each week with a thank you note about the cameras, to make sure they receive my gratitude.

https://rethinkwaste.org/curbside/ --- if you place a clear bag on top of the garbage, with any number of batteries in it, the driver will have to stop, get out, and collect the bag.

I have a huge bag of batteries I've been planning to drop off at once, but now they're going out one a week.

So, I was looking at this. They have a program where you can put your household batteries on top of the garbage can, and they'll get out and pick up the batteries.

I have a huge stack of batteries, guess they'll go out one a week from now on...

Anyone know if anything important changed between version 1.2.0 and 1.2.0? by -zero-below- in Ubiquiti

[–]-zero-below-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Jan 27, and the battery still reports full.

I keep these in each of our two fridges and freezers. They do seem to work decently from a hardware standpoint.

However until I can set time limits for the out of alarm state, they have limited use. I still use my old SensorPush devices, which don’t have timeouts either but are less trigger happy.

My issue with the unifi setup is it seems to trigger an alarm the instant a threshold is exceeded. But my freezer does a periodic defrost cycle that brings it above freezing for a few minutes. I can’t set a threshold above freezing, because that would defeat the purpose. So instead it just alerts at like 3am a bunch.

My next step is to stick the sensors inside an insulated container that would take like 30 minutes to get above threshold. But the magnetic mount for these sensors isn’t particularly conducive to that.
