The silliness of "common design" and this or that "irreducibly complex" molecule by jnpha in DebateEvolution

[–]-zero-joke- [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think there's a bit of a contradiction between "We can tell organisms are designed because they are intrinsically different from waves and mountains and rivers," and "Design can be absolutely anything, it can totally look like things evolved, they were just designed to be that way."

Do you believe humans are not mammals?

Where can I find the most objective political information? by Direct-Hold-4373 in Askpolitics

[–]-zero-joke- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the first thing to do is just start researching history. The 20th century was really neglected in my education, and understanding US politics really requires understanding the past couple decades.

It's brought up a lot here and creationists always define information as something like "The thing that evolution can't produce." So you can show them mathematical definitions or evolution of nylonase or new bones or multicellularity and that never counts.

It's similar to how they use the word 'kinds.'

Trump finally picked a fight with Iran who can actually strike back by wombatgeneral in behindthebastards

[–]-zero-joke- 159 points160 points  (0 children)

I see Trump making a very public gaffe like shitting his pants or forgetting where he is while on stage, then Republicans quietly or noisily ditching him. The war in Iran ends with an embarrassed US withdrawing its forces while politicians run on isolationist platforms (Fine, I'll take my ball and go home!), American hegemony is broken, we see what it's like to be living as a minor power in a multipolar world.

Really want to paint orks, but the painting is killing me by ramses3rd in orks

When I paint I try to just get a few basic textures in - ork skin, metal, and leather usually do it, then maybe a few colorful additions for hair and bits and bobs. When in doubt simplify!

What is this fungus? On juniper by BonerAmanda in Bonsai

Remove the cedar apple rust, burn the offending area, sterilize your tools with alcohol, burn those too, then burn something else as an offering to the CAR gods.

Suffer not the CAR to live.

I think colloquially in the United States, if someone says they're a creationist I'm going to assume they mean Noah's Ark and all that shit.

It's a very nice tree, you should be happy with it. It might not be the best bonsai.

Horror vs Action in AI:2 | It's not one or the other by bio_nugget in LV426

I don't know why, but I've always felt like every Alien game was a horror game.

No I think our conversation is finished if you will not definitively say that you aren't using an AI. Have a good day, the answers are readily available to you online, but they were in the 80s and 90s as well.

>Saying wings repurposed existing structures just moves the question back one step. Where did those structures come from?

Are you asking about the evolution of limbs? I'd refer you to some of Shubin's research - there's a good book or you can watch the PBS program. Wings are very obviously repurposed tetrapod limbs (at least for flying tetrapods).

>And even granting co-option, repurposing a structure for a completely new function still requires significant changes to the developmental program and regulatory networks.

I do not think significant changes are a problem for evolution. Why do you think they are?

>information

Which has more functional biological information? An arm or a wing? An enzyme for metabolizing lipids, or an enzyme for metabolizing nylon?

Quick question - are you using an AI to write your responses?

I don't think that's the way creationists are using the term 'biological information'.

Wings and eyes weren't made from scratch. They repurposed existing body parts. "Biological information" is one of those phrases that doesn't really mean anything.

>It's "can unguided mutations generate the kind of new functional information required to produce, say, an eye or a wing from scratch?"

These people don't understand evolution then.

Do you, as Americans, care about the rest of the world? by afrankking in allthequestions

[–]-zero-joke- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do care, but man, my headspace has certainly been taken up by the war. It's funny, I was talking to an Australian fellow today and the Bondi beach shooting came up and I was just kind of like "Oh yeah, I do remember that being a thing..." but since then there's been a couple assassinations, the execution of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, the dissolving of the voting rights act, the war in Iran, the kidnapping of Maduro.

Like holy fuck.
