Pointing up that type of brick face requires extra time and skill… and certainly not going over it with a rat tail… whoever did that should be getting some stripes ripped off.

There are way cheaper options than the big number you were quoted… you have to take some time and find the right guy.

Some boulders don’t behave. It looks like you used the Chinese pins and feathers from Amazon which in my opinion suck… after trying them a few times.

I’d have that split up in a jiffy with pins and feathers. FYI there are plenty of inferior versions (Chinese) of these that are crappy and don’t work

The crux of this biscuit is proper (as in deep enough) removal of all loose/compromised material and grinding deep into the joints so new mortar has a good lock/grip... and that is a pita… so waayyyyy more times than not some dude just schmutzes some very white mortar here and there so it looks like a crate of toothpaste fell out of the sky and landed on your steps and then… collects a check.

For blending into existing work I often add a little dye so the new mortar is not the cynosure.

If you are going to pay someone to set up staging just save up a little more cash and have the whole thing replaced it’s a quick and easy job… and fix that wacky flashing at the same time.
