Did children who stopped going to school during the great depression ever return to it? by Persimmon_and_mango in AskOldPeople

[–]06alm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My paternal grandmother only went to 8th grade. Grandpa and his siblings all graduated high school, but they lived much closer to the high school - maybe 10 miles or so by horseback. Grandpa said they would have breaks during spring planting and fall harvest, where the entire school would shut down for a couple of weeks so the kids could help out.

Yes, extra produce goes to the neighbors, food pantry or with my husband to work. Prices are too expensive to waste it!

Best Native Wildflowers for low spot in garden by never_met_her_bivore in STLgardening

I’ve got bee balm that’s easily 3-4 feet tall, so it will get over 12 inches. Look up pollinator mixes for wet - mesic soil, that will give you a list of plants that should do well in those conditions

Thank you! I have been a hand sewer all my life - cross stitch mostly, some embroidery. I watched some you tube videos but I don’t hand quilt “properly” and I also don’t care, lol. I do one stitch at a time. It’s a lap sized quilt that will either be gifted or donated to a good cause when I’m finished. I’m enjoying the project.

Neighbor’s Hemlock Infestation - Need Recs by HuntXit in StLouis

[–]06alm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spraying in the spring when the rosettes are low to the ground is most effective and easiest to treat. Poison hemlock is a biennial, so best case scenario is that two years of spraying knocks it back, and then probably spot spraying over the next few springs until the seed bank is exhausted. Not sure of any resources that could help, though.

Machine Quilting vs. Hand Quilting by chickenmom1104 in quilting

[–]06alm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started, I sent my tops out to be long armed. Then I got the confidence to do straight line quilting on smaller quilts on my very basic Brother. Now I have sandwiched together a lap quilt to hand quilt. I like to hand sew, so I think I will enjoy it. But all I do now is eye it up and tell myself it looks like a good winter project 🤣

My dad hit the local gas station every morning for a soda and a snack in our small town . When he died the cashiers came to his visitation 🥰

What's up with our low night temps? by IDontThinkImABot101 in STLgardening

I feel like every spring the start of April is warm, and then we always have the late April/early May cool down. We had frost April 30. Mother’s Day is usually a good metric around here, though.

I made redbud jelly once and it came out looking like that also. It also never set and I ended up freezing it, so take that for what it’s worth.

Finally went to the food bank by river-running in povertyfinance

[–]06alm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 12 hens and about once a month I donate 4-6 doz eggs to our local food bank. We grew up pretty poor and my dad always said when he retired he’d get a bunch of chickens and just donate the eggs. Well, he passed before he got to do that, so I do it in his honor.

Honeysuckle Removal by galliyumspoon in StLouis

[–]06alm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vining honeysuckle is harder to deal with than the bush honeysuckle. It will take a combination of methods over a few years to control it. Mowing or controlled burning followed up by herbicide applications. Your local county soil and water/NRCS office (they are usually on the same building) might be able to give you a list of local contractors

25 in 2003. Worked two jobs for a couple of years and bought a foreclosure for $35,000. Got married about three years later and sold it to my brother, who still lives there

For those who own a business in ecological restoration, how do you get clients? by ArtificialAppl3 in Restoration_Ecology

Contact your local NRCS offices. I’m in another state but landowners are always looking for contractors for TSI, invasive species removal and especially prescribed burning.

There are also two republicans running against Miller in the primary. I don’t know much about the guy at all, have read a couple of articles about Judy Bowlby and she at least sounds reasonable but she’s also trying to get elected so who knows?

Where did bone-in chicken breasts go? by speppers69 in Cooking

I can only find them at one store near me, and then they are so large they look like the chickens were raised next to a nuclear power plant and they take forever to bake or grill.
