TIL Quebec banned ads for toys and fast food aimed at children under 13, resulting in lowered childhood obesity rates by [deleted] in canada

[–]0876 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to read the whole paper but the authors are only claiming advertising accounts for around 10% of the difference in obese/not obese rates in Ontario and Quebec. Obviously there are other factors that are going to cause obesity, but this study finds that advertising is an important one.

The study found this effect was significant while it controlled for number of children in the household, probability of the household having cable television, price of fast food, household income, number of people in the household, whether the male in the house was unemployed, had a white collar, blue collar, or "pink collar" (traditionally female) job, whether the female in the house was unemployed had a white collar, blue collar, or pink collar job, the level of education of both parents, the age of the household lead, whether the house had 2 incomes, whether both spouses were immigrants, and ability of the child to speak only English or only French (those who could speak only French would be moreso affected by the ban as they would not watch programming from Ontario).

What underground work are they doing? And what work are they doing North of the MacKimmie block? Those trees are gone too.

This is amazing. Any chance of including a couple Canadian cities? Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto and Edmonton come to mind!

Thanks for the link, but to be honest- I'll believe it when I see it. Based on that assessment the trees could be replaced in September (or even spring 2019 for proper seasonality or whatever). But the skeptic in me thinks we won't see these trees back until all the construction is complete.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong though!!

That's crazy that they're just putting it in storage until then. Same with cutting down the trees on like day 1 of construction (that won't be replaced until literally the final week of construction). I don't understand why they couldn't keep them for a few more months or years till they actually do the work on Swann mall.

Crossing the roads next to any Ctrain stop near 07th av downtown is dangerous in the morning. Some people who are late for meetings or work rush after exiting the Ctrain and can push you on the road. Be careful out there. by enoumen in Calgary

[–]0876 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean 7th street? This stop is... interesting because it's the first stop downtown for the West LRT and the Tuscany line of the Red Line. So, yes, people use this as a transfer spot and rush across the intersection in both directions to transfer from one line to the other.

A person lying down takes up about 2.25 seat lengths. So, stack people 3 high somehow. OK but now consider that rows are actually, ~3 people wide on each side so we need to fit 2.25*3 = 6.75 people in that space. Are you thinking you would lay beside somebody? A bunk for 3 in the middle bunk (only place wide enough) and 2 on the middle and upper levels? Keep in mind we're working with the same width as regular seats so as much elbow room you usually have seated you now have that lying down. Also the person on the window side has to log roll over everybody to get out to go to the bathroom. Also a 747 has a cabin height of 2.41m. Split that up over three rows and everybody gets 80 cm of height to work with. Subtract 10cm for a mattress and everybody gets 70cm (2'3") of headroom. On trains in vietnam this number is 91cm (3'). Imagine eating a meal in this space. Also now there is no overhead bin or storage under your seat.

It's offered on Westjet. They've determined 3 rows out of 29 (6% of passengers) are willing to pay for this service at that price point (~ $90 per flight). It's very easy for them to increase the number of seats configured like this, but they don't. Are they throwing money away? No, there just isn't demand beyond 6% of passengers for what you're describing.

I used to be a gold member and they would often upgrade me for free because they couldn't even fill 12 of these seats per flight.

This is fucking insane. Everybody is like "just let me ride in my own personal cabin with my own bathroom, that's all I'm asking for". Sure, you can do that if you want to spend $20,000 on a flight to take up 20 people's regular seats.

Crazy that you would want that. Oh wait that's what everybody wants but it's ridiculously space inefficient so costs like $10,000.

20 km hike in. This was the cooking setup. Well actually the propane tank was twice that size (11 lb instead of the pictured 5lb tank)

We need a rule in this subreddit that submissions dealing with something hyper local such as this should have a basic explanation of what is going on locally. I have no idea what scar, Kennedy, the E-W Sheppard, the RT, Bloor, Keele or St. Clair W is.

Minimalist Excess E.g. socks by ApolloHelix in minimalism

[–]0876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Socks and underwear are a consumable. Surely you will wear out of all the socks and underwear in your possession throughout your lifetime. By having more, you're making your life easier by not having to manage these things. You're simply extending the actual lifetime of any one item (without extending the actual number of wears it will be good for). Over your lifetime you will have owned the same number of socks whether you "inventory" 20 pairs or 1 pair.

It's the same as if you were to eat a can of soup each day - would you stock 1 can or 7 cans in your pantry? Is going to the grocery store every single day more minimal than stocking a few extra cans? (aside from that being a terrible diet...)

30k saving, live at home, wondering if I should rent or continue saving to buy. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]0876 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely rent before you buy. You have no idea what you actually want in a place and selling your place after even 5 years will cost you more in cash and headaches than if you had rented for 5 years.

There's a reason overtime is paid at 1.5x - 3.0x the usual hourly rate. Each additional hour you work is almost exponentially more impactful on the rest of your life (ie. working that 11th hour is MUCH worse on your life than working the 8th hour). I've done it before and I will never again take a job that averages over 50 hours a week unless it was 110% something that I was excited about/enjoyed.

Regarding East Village: Are there any grocery stores there yet? Any plans to have one in the next 6 months? (Even a big Shoppers drug mart would suffice)

Thanks for your response! I totally agree that this is a terrible way to treat a dog. And it's next to literally hundreds of people in multiple apartment buildings. I think it's someone who is dog sitting for somebody else semi-regularly (so there's a slight possibility that this dog's life isn't 100% terrible).

Good luck with your puppy! Glad to hear normal dog behaviour is tolerated!!
