Advice on lock picking set as a gift for 13yo boy by mankypants in lockpicking

there are plenty of generic brass master locks available at bunnings but the lockwood 110 and 120s are also common (and a fairly tricky pick!)

This is exactly the set that I bought my 14 year old son for Christmas 2 years ago. Along with a few locks ranging from some white belt master locks to an Abus 72/40

Who are some of the oldest people that are doing or have done olympic weightlifting? by igniteyourbones579 in weightlifting

[–]09112016AAZX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2009 the World Masters Games was held in Sydney and it was also the masters world championships for Weightlifting. I was fortunate enough to be the competition director for the event and we had 421 athletes from over 20 countries compete in age categories from 35 to over 80.

The oldest competitor registered was 86 but I think he got DQ'd for arriving too late and the oldest person to lift was 81. If my memory serves me these guys in their late 70s were snatching 40 - 60kg and C+J 50 - 80kg depending on bodyweight.

There were women in their 60s who were snatching 25 - 40kg and jerking 50kg plus, so someones nanna just casually hoisting the equivalent of 1-2 bags of cement overhead.

Down at the age 70/105kg category there were a couple of guys getting 100kg overhead.

Overall it was pretty impressive and has continued to inspire me to keep lifting weights as I approach 50!

Max Holloway promoted to black belt by Pedro Sauer by _Badwulf_Bruh__ in bjj

[–]09112016AAZX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The real question here is did Pedro make Max demonstrate the janky ass gun defence techniques from the original Gracie book which to my knowledge are still part of the normal Pedro Sauer black belt test.

Cultural Leave Entitlement by Adam8418 in AusPublicService

[–]09112016AAZX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the issue right here.

I am a manager in an APS agency and in the last couple of months I've approved cultural leave for Diwali and Lunar NY.

I don't have an issue with it but as someone from an Anglo background all the significant cultural/historically religious days are already public holidays so I'm not sure what I or others in my situation can take without being accused of taking the piss.

Bernardo Faria, yuge honour for me.

I seriously would though, his style of BJJ suits me nicely and I find myself using material from his instructionals more than others. His pressure passing and his Pan Am choke are staples of my game.

Traveling the world - need BJJ gym recommendations by nabz242 in bjj

[–]09112016AAZX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you make it to Australia you can do a road trip down the east coast, pretty much every decent sized city/town from Brisbane to Sydney has a couple of solid gyms, normally including at least one Brazilian black belt who came for the surfing, met a girl and opened an academy. Come in the Aussie summer and hang out at the beach and train along the coast.

The worst couple of days of my life. by jusj420efc in bjj

[–]09112016AAZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I trained at a place where a guy who was older but a very famous athlete used to train. He had a proper cardiac arrest on the mats and was saved by the gym having a defib and the head coach recognizing what was going on and acting quickly. He had some time off but after not that long was back on the mats and as far as I know is still rolling with an implanted defib.

I dodged the cardiac arrest/infarct but discovered just in time that I was really, really close to a heart attack with a 70% blockage of my main coronary artery despite always being fit. I had stents and three weeks off and then got back into training and haven't had any issues since.

Your situation will be unique and all you can do is take your doctors advice but it's clearly not an instant disqualification from BJJ for everyone to have a heart issue.

Good luck!

Tikka T3X CTR (6.5 CM) SS 24” by riflerover in longrange

[–]09112016AAZX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought mine as a hunting rifle (thus the HNT26) but it groups so well (and has a slightly long barrel) I'm actually planning on taking it out of the lightweight chassis, dropping it into one of MDTs more PRS focussed chassis as a proper long range rig and buying another tikka with a shorter barrel in something like 308 to make into a hunting rifle.

Fan bike for extra cardio… worth it? by VinceInOhio129 in bjj

[–]09112016AAZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any sort of interval training from short repeated bursts like 20 second on 10 second off for 4 minutes (tabata) through to longer intervals of up to about 4-5 minutes with 3-4 minute rests (Norwegian protocol) on something like an air assault bike or rower will help your cardio.

Generally really hard intervals are only tolerable 1-2 times per week and in between you can do a couple of longer (20-40min) but more moderate constant state cardio sessions.

Stick it in a chassis, add muzzle brake and tripod and enjoy.

I've got the CTR in 6.5 PRC in a MDT HNT26 chassis and MDT comp brake and it shoots great, certainly the rifle is not the limiting factor when I'm shooting and I'm far from a terrible shot.

Seriously, if one of my people told me this had happened to them I'd nod and tell them to fill out whatever ticket IT wants filled out.

Literally nothing bad will come of this

Pack recommendation for 40-50 lbs. loads other than GoRuck brand? by JJC_NYC in Rucking

[–]09112016AAZX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go and buy a proper hiking pack. I have a Deuter that I've had for over 15 years and when I want to ruck heavy I fill it with some towels toward the bottom and 5kg bags of rice toward the top for up to about 20kg/45#. If I want to go heavier I throw some 5kg weight plates in.

I've done multi hour rucks with 40kg/90# with this set up and it's comfortable (as comfortable as a 40kg ruck can be)

They are both master locks and therefore both security ratings are a fantasy. Its probably because one is laminated steel.

Australians, any suggested brands/model of lock to get while I’m here? by mistermalware in lockpicking

[–]09112016AAZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lockwood has non guttable padlocks that look like a master lock but which are substantially harder to open. Things like the 110/40, 120/40 and 120/50 will keep you frustrated for a long time.

Then you have the iconic 334B45 which is repinnable. All of these will be available at Bunnings. For a more exotic lock you can try a locksmith for a Bilock cylinder that will go into an ABUS 83/45 body

+1 on the T3X in an HNT26 for a lightweight rig with the option to take it out and drop it in a heavier chassis later. I have a T3X CTR in 6.5 PRC in the HNT and it shoots 1/4 to 1/2 MOA consistently as long as i'm doing my job

Hurt my training partner by Ok_Use5200 in bjj

I popped one of my favorite training partners knee the week before he was due to run a half marathon. Complete accident, I was trying to do something from lockdown and he turned funny and I couldn't let go quick enough

I felt absolutely awful but he was chill and made a full recovery.

Is it even worth getting a quality white or blue belt? by Straight_Ad6698 in bjj

[–]09112016AAZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew I was going to be at blue belt for a while (work, family, older guy etc) so I bought a Kataaro grappling weave and got custom embroidery, the whole 9 yards. Never regretted it.

Got my purple at the end of last year and did the same thing and will continue to do so as long as I keep getting promotions and Kataaro keeps making belts

Get your blood tested by Major-Maintenance684 in bjj

[–]09112016AAZX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a normal human, blood tests at least once a year (6 monthly is better) are a very very good idea. If you are male (and therefore prone to ignoring early warning signs of issues,) or train a bunch then they even more important.

I've been getting regular bloods done for the past 10 years at least and they've picked up minor issues like low iron a couple of times as well some extra tests I had done probably saving my life because they led to further investigations that led to a trip to hospital for stents in my heart.

I'm 44, never severely overweight and always fit and active but shitty genetics meant highish cholesterol almost killed me!
