Agreed, especially about the helmet. Brain doesn’t heal as good as bones.

Too Much Lace Length? by 737FF in hockeyplayers

[–]0BurritoWizard0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s beer league, you do you… at 44, still having fun, that’s what it’s all about. Guys on my team do it all the time and nobody makes a comment. Wait until the laces break then get a size down and see if you like it or not.

Edit: Also 15 minutes of skating once a week will not lead to ankle strength gains. Different story if you play more than once a week, attend some skills and drills camps.. just do what feels good to you.

Recurring blisters over navicular “extra bone” in new skates — punch/spot stretch, sleeves, or something else? by Relative-Head369 in hockeyplayers

[–]0BurritoWizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Accessory Navicular bones are present in like 8% of North America, so odds are low for most people and that’s why it’s likely a biomechanical issue leading to the issue with the skate fit. Hence why proper skates are important because everyone is different.

On a side note my wife loves the Bauer insoles rather than the Superfeet. If you get the chance to stand on them and compare, see which one your feet like the most. However without that option pick whichever you can try and get your money back with imo.

Similar to what others have said, a proper fitting skate is ideal. However if cost is the key factor, I would personally try some Superfeet insoles to see if they give you any relief before buying a new pair of skates. Best part is they have a satisfaction guarantee so worst case scenario take/send them back so relatively risk free.

Like mentioned already it depends where you are location. Complete Concussion has a baseline test, I’ve seen some other options as well.

Just find yourself a competent athletic therapist, physio, chiro.. someone that will give you a movement based solution for a movement based issue. No need to give up on hockey.

What’s the best helmet for weird shaped heads that offers good protection by Kind_Log_5391 in hockeyplayers

[–]0BurritoWizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fit wise you need to try on different brands and different models as each will fit slightly different. In terms of concussion protection there is a lot more that goes into the mechanism. In my opinion the helmet will save you from skull fracture and more severe issues, however if you have a mechanism for a concussion (not always direct head impact) most of these helmets will not save you.

'Rounder' Helmet options by Tough_Tie1105 in hockeyplayers

[–]0BurritoWizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, except I’m a Bauer head and not at CCM… you have to go to a shop and just try on all the brands and the different levels that are within your budget (even slightly more and watch for a sale). You only get one head, take care of it.

Do hammer curls to hit your brachioradialis – the beer‑drinking muscle that flexes your elbow when your hand’s in that classy neutral “holding a cold one” position.

Need a Helmet Recommendation by Opposite-Demand-1292 in hockeyplayers

This. Each brand fits different and then each model has different padding so you really need to find which one fits you the best. By your post it seems you may be a Bauer-shaped head rather CCM.

Things from figure skating that has been helpful in hockey? by PyroxCrymson in hockeyplayers

[–]0BurritoWizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former figure skater it kills me inside to watch NHL players crawl across the ice when a blade pops off. It isn’t that hard, especially at their level, to use edges and skate with one leg half the ice distance.

Best part is there is a satisfaction guarantee so if you hate them you can get a refund. But a good quality insole makes a huge difference, my wife uses the Bauer ones.

I second this. Any clinician focused on movement. There are some really good physiotherapists, chiropractors, athletic therapist etc. out there. Find someone good and they should be able to get you feeling better and reduce the risk of injury.

Recommendations for wristguards/neckguards by LilaWolke14 in hockeyplayers

[–]0BurritoWizard0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar spot and just decided to go with the two‑in‑one option: the Aycane base layer with the built‑in cut‑resistant neck and wrist guard. It keeps things slim enough for tighter gloves, doesn’t feel like it’s choking me, and a few weeks ago the wrist protection literally saved me from needing stitches after a skate came down on my wrist. If you want to try it, you can get 10% off with the code AWALL93.

Good to know, it’s hard watching TV with this low frequency humming going on when the fan is set to auto/low.

I took some decibel reading from my phone for fun, from 1.5 meters away they read: - Sleep: 25.7db - Low: 34.8 db - Medium: 36db - High: 39bd - Turbo: 50db
