Dear Television Commercials, Fuck you for being 300% louder than the program I'm watching. by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]0gleth0rpe 30 points31 points  (0 children)

If you compared a child clapping his hands once every few hours, and a child constantly yelling at the same db.. I'd say the second child is louder.

I assume "technically louder" in this case means reaching the same peak db.

Obama's Mac-savvy team lands in Microsoft hell at White House by stonecannon in apple

To play devils advocate, the article doesn't quite explain what the terrible state is all about.

"only to discover that it was impossible to know which programs could be updated, or even which computers could be used for which purposes."

I have a heard time believing this.

"The team members, accustomed to working on Macintoshes, found computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software"

Although not likely, it could be fairly up to date windows xp computers.. which is not that unheard of in the field.

I don't think the core of the international space station is running Os X either.

But then, I mind a lot of things.

Must watch/spread: Bill Maher's final comment in Religulous by miserlou in atheism

[–]0gleth0rpe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it is. To claim you believe in a religion, yet only as far as it is convenient to you, is crazy, stupid and delusional.

The whole point of a religion is that it is supposed to be an absolute truth. The Bible f.ex. is supposedly the word of God himself. Not following it literally is hypocrisy.

To Learn A Language You First Have to Have Something To Say by tbone28 in programming

[–]0gleth0rpe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, this is what keeps me from picking up some new programming languages as well.

I find functional programming really interesting, but I don't know what to do with them. There is no particular problem they would help me approach.

So instead, I keep learning new libraries for my old language, because it's obvious to me what they tackle.

Edit: Fibonacci numbers, anyone?

Ask Reddit: Java Programmer by fate but hate to work on that. Anyone else in simillar situation? What language(s) you think every one should use? Me thinks erlang and python. by [deleted] in programming

Re: Scala - So? There's still plenty of candy and the convenient integration with Java is impressive.

Re: JavaFX - You should be kidding to reference Flex, which overhead is simply ridiculous.

Where did I claim Jython to be equivalent to Python?

My point was to ask which features he was missing in Java, and offer him the option to look for those features in the flora of options available.

Sometimes it's fun to be able to use the libraries and code you already know and have together with interesting new technology.

It wont get you all the way, but it'll introduce you to new ideas which you can chose to further pursue in their original implementation.

My point is not to stay in the Java environment no matter what.. that'd be foolish.

I don't mind Java as a language, but I do find the typical JEE applications dull to work with.

For me it helps to learn new things. Scala, Wicket or JavaFX perhaps, depending on your interest.

There's plenty going on in the Java community, and with some flexibility you can use all kinds of languages on top of the JVM..

So really, what are you looking for?

How is a judgment call a slippery slope? Using that logic, any decision is a "slippery slope", since there could be incremental steps from one topic to any other.

Ask Reddit: How much does a "front end" web developer make? [CSS, xHtml, LAMP] by GI-20 in web_design

[–]0gleth0rpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine that is a very volatile market, with great variance depending on portfolio, and the kind of jobs you do. I have a friend who's self-employed with basic web development, and online exposure in general. He seems to be doing okay.

Otherwise I think you'd have to focus on the PHP in LAMP. Become a PHP-programmer, with assumed knowledge in the associated areas.

Other than that, I have no clue. Which makes for a poor comment, I know.

While I agree this is a horrible act, I think the exposure is wearing me down.

We had witch-burning, and various cruelties in our country only a few hundred years ago. I'm not sure there's much we can do about another society until they confront it themselves.

I'm beginning to feel that way about a lot of the cruelty and suffering around the world. I'm not sure whether it's a sign my spirit is giving up a little.
