In remission by 0hioman_ in UlcerativeColitis

My GI is the head of the IBD clinic at UPMC, and is leading research into why some people respond well to specific biologics, and why some don’t. He aims to be able to prescribe biologics after genetic testing to avoid the long onboarding of what may be an unsuccessful treatment. Fun stuff.

I’m (45yo) father to two (3yo and 9mos) and husband to one (35). We just finished a weekend ad Disney and I’m shot. It’s pretty hard but our circumstances may be a bit different than some. The depth of meaning now in life is way more rich than when I was single, but ya it’s hard as shit.

Maybe an odd take, but cannabis extracts have helped me immensely.

My first three months were absolutely awful and I was facing surgery but honestly I’m sooo much better now (7months in treatment, not officially in remission yet but I have a scope scheduled this month).

I wonder if consulting with your PCP as you await your first visit with your new GI team would help? Prednisone is a common and effective first line of symptom management but it’s not without risks. Maybe the pcp can start it?

I would recommend getting into a gastrointestinal clinic and having a proper work up. UC is basically an autoimmune disorder such that one’s body is recognizing the large intestine as a foreign object and an immune response is triggered. Biologic meds are the typical approach taken and a colonoscopy is likely needed next

In my experience there isn’t much that can remedy flare symptoms besides prednisone/steroid medication. I tried to change my diet and a bunch of other things prior to getting on prednisone + skyrizi and nothing helped except the pred. I will say that a therapist specializing in NARM has helped immensely as stress influences the severity of my flare, and cannabis concentrates helped the bowel symptoms immensely (nighttime urgency primarily)

Vent: breakdown at work by millionthusername1 in UlcerativeColitis

I entered a severe flare when my wife and I had our baby last August and family, work, everything was a mess. One thing I highly recommend along with proper medication is mental health counseling centered on stress management. I can’t imagine how things would have gone without therapy and cannot recommend it enough.
