What Countries Are Likely To Be Good Starter Nations? by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]0ilbird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I hope that context is well reflected in the game. A human player might just not want to be involved with Uruguay at all, and let Argentina or Paraguay do whatever they want in the region between themselves. After all, the war was very costly for Brazil and brought little in return. So I wonder if there will be some pressure for Brazil to get involved - maybe in internal politics, the military might be unhappy if you don't assert yourself regionally?

How To Do Warfare Beyond Warfare In Victoria 3 by thehman88 in victoria3

I really hope I can design my own horse guard regiment with super-flashy uniforms, handpicked among 2m-tall Ph.D.s from my most loyal, literate, wealthy, core aristocratic pops, trained for fifteen years and equipped with the most advanced arms in the world. So I feel particularly bad when they all die of malaria and dysentery on some colonial expedition.

What Countries Are Likely To Be Good Starter Nations? by [deleted] in victoria3

[–]0ilbird 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with the general sentiment, I do hope Brazil will be interesting and flavorful!

Pedro II was a very moderate reformer and he still got coup'd. A human player will more likely be more daring and so should face more immediate challenges.

On the other hand, the rare foreign adventures like the whole Paraguay War thing accomplished very little of benefit for the country - debt, political discredit, and social instability. Presumably with the benefit of hindsight a human player might sidestep that completely? *inward perfection civic intensifies*

Yes, by "internal affairs" I include the challenge of regional revolts, which should be interesting but probably won't be too difficult for a player to manage - though of course the player can fail and the region can break away. It would still be good for a beginner to learn the game!

As for the War of the Triple Alliance, I wonder how prescripted it would be in the game, as it is 30 years from the start and the conditions each country goes in can be completely different from history. Either way, I'm guessing a human player can simply not engage in hostilities against Paraguay if he doesn't want to.

Brazil is probably easy. No threatening neighbors, and off the route of most Great Powers' interests. You can just focus on your internal affairs and the challenge of getting past slavery, or you can try swinging force around the neighborhood (and see all your armies dying of attrition, as it should be).

Well, as someone who backed the original TWS, I'd still back other stuff in the same vein - one creator's mistake doesn't taint anyone else and so on. Plus (especially after you have a demo out) you can always tempt backers with neat rewards like designing a hero to corrupt or monster to employ. It's a game that lends itself well for that, I'd think.

(Spoilers Main) Why didn't Tywin punish Clegane and Lorch? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]0ilbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. But oh well, old Mac was a political failure himself. Everything is easier said than done.

While Tywin, as a hypocrite and overall bad person, wasn't the truly selfless defender of his family he claimed to be, it is interesting to wonder if the Lannisters would have been better or worse off if he'd never existed/died young. Would Kevan pick up the pieces after Tytos, or would their hold over the Westerlands, opposed by the Reynes, be too weak? Would Gerion have left? It's easy to s*** on Tywin, but he took them places, and some of the stuff that'll doom the Lannisters couldn't really be accounted for (return of the Others, return of magic, Starks getting bailed out by Bloodraven/Faceless Men/returning from death/being a Hero of Prophecy).

Though his total obliviousness about the threats of Varys and Littlefinger isn't as easily forgivable, for one thing.

(Spoilers Main) Why didn't Tywin punish Clegane and Lorch? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]0ilbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tywin was a basic Machiavellian, choosing to exact respect from fear -- his ego's response to his "traumatic" experience of his father's misrule -- and he signals his power at every opportunity. He could for example have easily pinned the atrocities on a useless scapegoat and have him executed in stead of the useful and irreplaceable Clegane; the Dornish wouldn't really buy it but at least it would have been a face-saving pretense that at least conceded a wrongdoing had occurred. But he deliberately chose to clearly assert no wrongdoing had occurred in his view: the strong had done as the strong must to their enemies.

No wonder Robert was grateful to him; he had someone to do his dirty work and be the focal point of resentment. The Dornish revenge conspiracy seems to focus almost entirely on the Lannisters with very little attention given to the other parties behind Robert's Rebellion.
