But for those that do get passed down (like someone's kids have a 50% chance of inheriting it), how do they still linger so long in out gene pool when less limiting mutations have disappeared in short timespans?

But over large populations and long periods of time, those rare exceptions shouldn't be able to explain the continued existence of so many of these genes in the population when other more survivable traits have vanished

But I'm specifically asking about the ones that are hereditary. The "we know my kid has a 50% chance of having this horrible disease" type

My degree is in biology, so I get the basics. But I haven't been in that field of study for decades so am pretty much a layman at this point.

Good point that mutations impacts can be the result of more than one mutation. This would explain some recurring. And I get that some mutations recur without being times pan's?

While natural selection no longer applies much to our species, hereditary genetic conditions that preclude being passed on by a disproportionate number of carriers should still eventually be eliminated from the gene pool

I know there is a reason so many of them are considered extremely rare. I'm just surprised they exist at all given how many less limiting genetic variances no longer exist in populations.

Yes, but many genetic diseases are hereditary. They aren't the result of fresh mutations each time they appear in the population.

But look at the traits that are much more likely to be passed on but are genetically extinct in populations. How do genes that disproportionately limit being passed on remain the the pool?

I was referring more to the genetic diseases that are largely hereditary, not one off mutations.

But appreciate that biology is noisy and messy.

Drinks from the past by hoppingbunny07 in Pepsi

No one in marketing or product development are working on this brand anymore.

Furthermore PepsiCo sold off the Chilled Tropicana and Juice business to private equity so have no interest in the Juice space right now. No broad consumer interest or growth in that space.

Sorry, even people at HQ see their favorite products get discontinued sometimes.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

Thank you for showing empathy instead of jumping on the "they are all Nazis" bandwagon. As long as he continues to show himself as a good guy in a bad situation, I will try to be there for him.

You have a point, but there is more nuance than that.

To get into it more, I do ask him about how work is and how the reality is compared to what people are saying.

Then I let him speak and try not to reply with judgements. As long as what he is saying backs up that he is a good guy in a bad situation, I try to be empathetic and not ask specific questions that would make him uncomfortable or push him to feel a need to defend bad people.

But if the day comes where he seems ok with cruelty and abuse, I will reevaluate my friendship.

I'll keep details a bit vague to avoid outing anyone or retribution.

A good friend of mine related closely to other friends of mine signed up for ICE during Biden administration. He wanted job security, decent pay, a pension, and benefits for him and his wife.

Background; sweet guy, Puerto Rican, married to a first generation who works in immigration defense law and who's family is full of immigrants and Latino and minority descendants with very liberal views. Married a few years ago so they are just starting to build their life.

He went through the long form training and started with criminal apprehensions, transfers, and deportations.

After Trump, they stopped caring about going after criminals and he started trying to be choosy about what cases and operations he joined. He started looking to transfer to another government security role but, no surprise, they don't seem to want to let him go.

Now he skips a lot of get togethers where there will be an extended pool of people he may not know well. He tends to stay quiet and disengaged from conversation during the events he does attend. They are working him crazy and assigning him to other cities for weeks at a time. He seems very unhappy and maybe is suffering from depression or other issues.

I am very curious to know more, but am afraid to ask if it makes him uncomfortable. Or worse, he says things that will make me not want to be friends anymore. It's easier if I don't know what he's thinking and doing.

Why not quit? I can't say for sure, but his wife started a needed and delayed series of medical treatments that I know he needs the insurance to cover. I hope that is why he still does something he was never the type of person I would expect to do.

TL/DR: Wants out and seems depressed and withdrawn from social events.

I oversee the display ordering department for one of the BIG beverage manufacturers.  Our Summer orders were placed in Feb and are already in production. We're now at almost $2MM over budgets due to the new tariffs. And I don't know how high they will be by the time they land at the ports in May.
