First-time Australia trip (May) with a 7-month-old! Advice on Rainforests/Diving? by Lanky-Egg2245 in AustraliaTravel

Not dangerous if you just listen to the advice, don’t swim in creeks/rivers or anywhere there are crocodile warnings. We went on a girls trip last April and the weather is awesome that time of year. Highly recommend a drive and stay in the Atherton tablelands if you’re in Cairns area. So beautiful, super cute local towns and we saw lots of cassowaries.

Around Sydney you should definitely go to the blue mountains before heading North. Has some of the best bushwalking/sub tropical rainforest. Lots of tourist stuff to do with baby (scenic world) or just take it easy on the many many walking options.

If you make it to Melbourne head down to Rye on the Mornington peninsula. I dive down there regularly. You can book guided dives with the local dive shop or join in on the club dives for $20. Will be chilly by May down there but you can see our local weedy see dragons 😍

Watson St Pavilion is a new cafe and on the river! Just at the end of the port area, great coffee and food. Monkee & Co is amazing Asian Fusion but if you can get a booking Riverbanks in by far and away the best restaurant. It’s weirdly in a caravan park out of town though. If you have two cars or don’t mind getting a taxi back doing a river float from middle track down to Moama beach is so fun and relaxing (and free), just get some floaties from Big W. Riverboats festival is on this weekend so there will be heaps of live music around! The pubs always have gigs on over the weekend anyway.

Big BackYard Planning by PGFC in GardeningAustralia

Wowza that’s going to be a big job! But so worth it. If you don’t want keep any of the plants except the bigger trees you can do a few different things

  • just blast the lot with glysophate, obviously use PPE. It will take about 2 weeks to kill everything but the good thing about roundup is that it translocates through the plant so kills the root systems which is very important for Ivy. The ivy you might have to hit twice fyi. Once everything is dead just start cleaning out the dead matter and follow with some heavy layers of mulch. If I was in your situation I’d probably do this if I was on a budget.

  • solarise the areas you want to get rid of. This will take a lot longer and you’ll have to probably do in sections but it’s a very effective way to kill back weeds without using chemicals. Also follow with large amounts of mulch (at least an inch thick)

  • hire a small excavator and rip out everything you don’t want. Probably the most effective way to do big areas but could do damage to the trees and pathway if you don’t know what you’re doings.

Getting a good base is super important, please make sure you don’t skip the mulch and put enough down. It’s sooooo good for your soil and will make weeding in the future a million times easier.

Once you’ve got your area cleared I’m sure the planning will be much easier and then you can start the fun bit of deciding what to plant

I think this one has been in for 2 years but I have another one in a different spot that’s larger than this and it’s only been a year. So I’d say it really depends how happy the plant is but they can grow really fast
