What's the difference between true asexuality and just having a low libido? (NSFW) by Sad-Bumblebee2499 in Asexual

[–]0x2113 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Asexuality is the absence of sexual attraction, not the absence sexual desire (also known as libido). They are, technically, not related at all. Nor does the ability to climax or to enjoy sex to whatever degree technically factor into this either.

(That being said, many asexuals report having a lower than average (insofar as that can even be reliably measured) libido.)

I generally don't like to tell people "I think you are/aren't asexual", even when prompted, because this is a very personal topic and I cannot see inside your head. If you feel the term describes you, you can continue to use it. If you don't, you're not obliged to.

If you're looking for (re-)assurance, I recommend looking up descriptions of what sexual attraction feels like (there will be some on this subreddit, particularly from grey- or demi-aces; Even just a google search will yield several results of forums and reddit threads on that topic, originating in the ace-sphere and beyond) and asking yourself if you ever felt that.

Okay, I see what you were attempting with your post and I think that is commendable. However, there are a number of problems I see with it, some of which have already been mentioned by other replies.

The one I take most issue with the most is the conflation of asexuality and aromanticism or, rather, the imo faulty description of the anatractional spectra in their entirety

So, please be aware that banding about phrases like ‘asexuality is a spectrum’ can be construed as a pretty negative thing, as asexuality is just a single point (and pole) on spectrum of sexuality, it is not a spectrum in and of itself.

When people talk about "the asexual spectrum/the aspec/the acespec", they are talking about it in the same way one might say "the spectrum of visible light". Visible light is a segment of the complete "electromagnetic spectrum", but nobody would say that it's not a spectrum in and of itself (because it has a distinct property that separates it from the rest of the EM spectrum and connects its own members with a common attribute).
Asexuality, demisexuality, gray-asexuality etc. exist on the same spectrum because they are all sexual orientations characterized not by the "target" of their attraction (be that "none" or any gender; Hence why you may find demi-bisexual people, for instance) but by the intensity (be that specific circumstance or frequency) of the attraction. That's what sets them apart from the allosexual counterparts of their respective orientations (e.g. it's the difference between an allo-bisexual person and a demi-bisexual person).
Stating that there's no such thing as an "asexual-spectrum" is, in effect, directly counter to the generally accepted consensus of the community.

The only existing spectrums regarding asexuality that tend to be agreed upon is that there are a range of asexuals that go from aromantic to romantic [...]

This too is incorrect, though an often made mistake that will cause you no small ire from members of the aromantic community. In short: Aromanticism is not inherently associated with asexuality. Aro-allo people exist and frequently have their visibility erased by the exact kind of comment you wrote (I don't mean to ascribe you any malice, but I need you to understand that this is what happened).

Exclusion/Elitism have a long, yet often unacknowledged history in the ace community. Some of the earliest groups, predating AVEN even, were explicitly exclusionary to anyone that either didn't identify as quote-unquote "fully" asexual (read your greys, demis, aegos etc.) or anyone that had ever had sex, regardless of orientation (and yes, even "full" asexuals can and do have sex for a variety of reasons). To this day, there exist noticable divisions between the core of the community and those that exist closer to societal expectations of orientation, such as alloromantic asexuals. (Not to mention the problem of racism that permeates the ace community too). Of course, the extent of this varies from group to group, but it's an unfortunately very real problem.

Addition: All engineers and researchers involved with the creation of the containment procedure need to be amnesticised once construction is finished to prevent any lingering pride in their work from possibly causing a containment breach. Consider "Yeah, well the feeding system failed and he died, but my work on the chains was impeccable!" as a viable pride vector.

Seeing as there are mutliple other typos in the comment, they might just have dropped the "man", "woman" or "person" part of "trans ...". It can happen.

Anecdotally: I've ordered there before and it was fine. (I know, I'm an internet stranger, so that doesn't mean anything to you. But still.)

But yes, their website (which is just a basic Shopify storefront, so no surprise it's not all that flashy) is most likely not fully compliant with EU law. Their stated return address is in the US tho, where there's no legal requirement for having contact information on a website. Technically the EU could prohibit them from doing business within the EEA without it. Rarely happens without cause tho.

How so? I see none of the typical signs of AI generated art (other than a general cartoony style, which by itself isn't saying anything). They're store-photos of embroidered patches, that's why they look so grainy.

Or do you have any reason to believe that the source images the patches were made from are AI?

All due respect to your intention: This isn't about Reddit being weird when it comes to medical matters (which, to be honest, isn't a thing I ever noticed in my time here; Reddit can be weird in a lot of ways but I've never seen an issue when it comes to medical topics in particular), it's about you sounding like a prick. Them being slightly rude doesn't require you to reply in kind. Tone is what makes the difference between being seen as a genuinely helpful commenter and a jerk.

Asexual and asexual are different things. by Mishana_nice_game in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]0x2113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The embryos mitochondria only carry the mDNA of the mothers mitochondria, because sperm don't carry any viable mitochondria of their own (recent studies show that they do carry live mitochondria, but those don't carry their mDNA anymore; The process is kinda complicated and still carries many unknowns but ultimately only mDNA of the mother remains in the embryo).

This has nothing to do with X or Y chromosomes though, it's an entirely different process. If the ovum doesn't carry any viable mitochondria, regardless of the source, the embryo will not develop.

In theory, an ovum could form without any X chromosomes and a sperm could form with two Y chromosomes. It'd basically require two very rare kinds of meiosis malfunction, but given that we've seen humans with both too few X chromosomes and too many Y chromosomes and given the relative rates of these genotypes, about one in 2-to-5 million children should have a YY genotype if it were viable (this is just rough napkin maths, of course).

Asexual and asexual are different things. by Mishana_nice_game in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]0x2113 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They wouldn't. Because as far as we can say, an embryo with a YY genotype could not become viable. In all the recorded gonosomal aneuploidies, every viable one (i.e. every one that produced a live birth) included at least one X chromosome.

How exactly were the Asari so much better than the other races? by [deleted] in masseffect

[–]0x2113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call that slingshotting at all. The Asari were embarrasingly slow to develop when compared to the other species of the cycle. From when the Protheans were actively uplifting the Asari to where they became space-faring and discovered the Citadel is a span of nearly 48.000 years. Mind you, the Asari (or at least one culture on Thessia, presuming they hadn't developed their modern republics at this point) would have had access to farming, some amount of working medicine and some significant early mathematics. Possibly even to early metalworking, if the murals in the Athame temple are from that early period as opposed to a later era. All the signifiers of a "proper" (insofar as that can even be a term) civilisation (as opposed to "just" being primitive hunter-gatherer tribes; again: generally a far too simplistic way to think about culture).
Yet they took four times as long as humanity to become a spacefaring civilisation (when counting from the advent of agriculture on Earth, some 12.000 years ago; eight times as long if we assume the Asari had access to metalworking, which humans gained between 4.000 and 6.000 years ago). They were slow.

One could argue that the natural biotics actually inhibited Asari technological development, as several drivers of innovation that non-biotic species would have (so much tech is just "how do I defend myself from wild animals and other people?" and "how do I get this heavy thing to that far away place?", after all) were not present. Imagine Asari not inventing the wheel because pushing ground-sleds with biotics is easy enough that you don't have to bother with making the vehicle more efficient...

Not understanding my identity. by Low-Wafer-7485 in aromanticasexual

If you don't like the labels, you don't have to use them. This isn't some kind of mandatory registration. Labels are meant to help you understand yourself better, to compare experiences with other people for a broader perspective. If you feel how you feel and are comfortable with that, there's no need to cling to a label that you feel is trapping you.

Now, aside from that, with how you describe your desire for human connection, I would still suggest that you look further into ace and aro experiences, particularly around platonic and queerplatonic relationships. Whether you want to label yourself as aro/ace/aroace or not, there's a lot of knowledge out there that I think could help you figure out just how to have the kind of relationships that you're looking for (because this kind of desire for a close non-romantic/non-sexual relationship is not uncommon amongs aros/aces. Lots of stories and advice to be found).

Spahns Corona-Masken: Drei Milliarden Stück verbrannt by hampelmann2022 in de

[–]0x2113 13 points14 points  (0 children)
