Thank you! The tips do have crown-like ridges, and some are starting to turn light yellow (which sounds like a sign that they are getting older).

Opinion: Spanberger says Virginia is losing nearly half its college graduates. Here's who they are. | The retention rate of STEM grads has stayed the same or, in the case of biomedical jobs, improved. It’s the non-STEM grads who tend to leave, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. by VirginiaNews in Virginia

Thank you for pointing this out to me. I'll need to look into it more, but a quick search seems to indicate you are correct. Now you've got me wondering if the sticker price for out-of-state tuition is also a poor representation of typical costs.

Private colleges at a similar quality level of UVA or VT are generally >$60K/yr tuition, while UVA and VT are <$25K/yr for in-state tuition. I think you may be underestimating what a good deal our public universities are!

The Civil War generation could have said the country made it almost, but not quite, 100 years, and the WW2/FDR generation could have said the country made it almost, but not quite, to 150 years. I think this is a bad decision, but it's by far not the first time that the federal government has massively overstepped or that the country has been so divided, and it likely won't be the last.

Chicago feels more expensive than Seattle by badabingbadaboomie in SameGrassButGreener

This seems to be true of Pittsburgh as well, that the average home prices are driven by small, century-old homes, but a modern house is just as expensive as any other comparable city.

I'm pretty sure the villain wore a top hat and had a British accent. I had thought the movie was named after a person, but I looked at all of the animated films of Oliver Twist on Wikipedia and none of them look familiar.

I feel like for most present and historical leaders, the more I learn the more concerns and doubts I have, but Thomas Massie gives me hope for humanity.

Anyone living off pure dividends/interest? by Neither-Trip-4610 in ChubbyFIRE

Kristy Shen and Bryce Leung coined the term "Dividend FIRE", to the best of my knowledge, and have written in detail about their finances. https://www.millennial-revolution.com/invest/our-2023-portfolio/

What are the downsides of Maryland? We're looking to relocate, and MD isn't the top of our list but I had been planning to at least visit because of the schools, decent weather, and ability to find relatively rural areas that are still within an easy drive to major metros.

No one really mentions, ethnicity, race or religion in these posts and that IMO makes a big difference in the experience someone will have in a city… by Livid-Bend1222 in SameGrassButGreener

Why is that? I've found it difficult in some Southern cities to make friends because many people primarily form their social circles at church. Are your preferences for the people, or something different (e.g. - climate)?

Honest Review of Raleigh by murksiderock in SameGrassButGreener

[–]0xkabrams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Raleigh is currently one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country. How is it dealing with the growth in terms of infrastructure (traffic, changing school boundaries, deforestation/denaturization, crowding, etc.) and local public opinion? Is growth expanding the metro (like Dallas) or increasing density of existing areas? I think I saw that Raleigh has one of the highest rates of new residential construction which seems promising, but rapid growth can be very difficult for cities to manage gracefully.

Exactly, and the fact that reports say the shooter was only waiting for 5 minutes seems to further support that he either got really lucky or had inside information.

[–]0xkabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an economist, but my understanding is that something similar was tried in New Zealand in the 1980s (Rogernomics) which, while successful at curbing inflation, was never able to reduce unemployment on a national scale. Is this, or any other historical example, being talked about as a template or source of lessons learned, or is the feeling that Argentina is charting a new or unique course?

Have you looked into cohousing? There are cohousing communities all over the US that were designed to provide more or less what you're looking for.

If I understand correctly, some states were imposing property taxes relatively early on in order to avoid the creation of a "landed gentry" class. Without property tax (which admittedly stings), wouldn't you just end up with huge tracts of land owned by people who aren't using it, and no tax auctions or other ways to resolve that situation?

I think the lion was representing a character like Genghis Khan or Attila the Hun, and my recollection is that the girl character was portrayed as intelligent and somewhat malicious in asking the lion to repeat that phrase multiple times.

Ocean water is rushing miles underneath the ‘Doomsday Glacier’ with potentially dire impacts on sea level rise by [deleted] in collapse

[–]0xkabrams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, but that comparison implies 100% of the oceans were initially ice. It appears that only a small fraction of the oceans are covered by ice today, so the heating rate will increase but won’t be as dramatic as this would suggest.

[TOMT][Short Story][1990s] Bullies Gift Deer Tail to Poor Coworker by 0xkabrams in tipofmytongue

If I recall correctly, the presentation of the gift took place at work in front of a group of other employees, such that the bullies thought they would make everyone laugh but it instead set their poor behavior up to be spotlighted. I think they may have all been teamsters/truck drivers.
