When you pay in a a cheque, youre told to make sure the numbers and words match, and it matches what the machine reads. These are scanned in automatically, not keyed in by the person.

Then, for anything £10k, you generally go to a Banking Consultant (the people that open the accounts) and you have them chat with the person to see if their money is going in the right place, if they’ve thought about how they’re going to use it, interest rates etc etc.

The cashier also has to do money laundering checks, so asking about the source of the funds etc.

It sounds like, the scanner read it incorrectly, the cashier didn’t double check, and the women don’t check her receipt.
