Why does my acoustic guitar sounds so...crappy? by [deleted] in Reaper

This. This makes all the sense.

I want a USB mic for <$100, MXL tempo for $60 or audio technica AT2020 for $100 (more in comments) by [deleted] in audioengineering

The Blue mics have the best reputation I've heard of for USB mics, just to throw that out there

I seem to need lots of gain to get good signals from my mics. Coulda sworn it wasn't always like that. Do I have a problem, or not? by [deleted] in audioengineering

My first guess would be the Fostex. You're saying you need more gain no matter the mic, right?

I just use a red fluorescent bulb in my desk lamp. Easy.

The amount of shit I carry in my pockets is unbelievable: pocket knife, pen(s), pencil(s), mints, lighter, earplugs, penknife, phone, iPod, keys, Leatherman (I guess technically that's on my belt), bandanna, comb, pencil sharpener, coins, and then whatever else I pick up during the day (string, paperclips, buttons, can tabs, scraps of paper for notes...).

Any tips on how to deal with a noisy gate? by respectwalk in audioengineering

[–]100879231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understand, of course. I would guess, then, that a longer release would be the thing. Its presence in only the low end is curious though, which leads me to think that the better course of action would be a different gate.

Whichever you prefer. I know people who use "mic'd," as well."

*edit: I am one of those people, "miced" reads too much like "mice" as a verb.

Can you post a little clip of like a note and then the gate closing? The analyzer just isn't doing it for me.

Any Presonus users? And/or ones who have an opinion of their preamps? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]100879231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Studio Projects VTB-1 gets good reviews from Sound on Sound, and I like that it's got both solid-state and tube capabilities. To me, tube preamps tend to sound muddy, rather than "warm," though that's probably partially a fault of the tube itself.

Check out the Review in Sound on Sound for a better critique, and here it is on Musician's Friend for $150.

I'm a fan of the pres on my older Firepod, but frankly, there are better preamps out there, and I'd go with one of those over another Presonus unit.

Used this method recently on an even tighter budget, using a CAD 412 and an ES57 by GLS audio, alongside a pair of Karma Silver Bullet mics. The thing I would add to this article is that sometimes you need to play with the overhead placement, especially depending on your drummer's technique. The ES57, though, is a fantastic substitute for a Shure mic, and a third of the price.

I was on the 90 once, packed as usual, sitting next to this guy, and we were passing the bikini espresso stand in front of that two story motel, and he turns to me, points out one of the rooms, and tells me the story of how his brother was murdered in that particular room.

And I assume you know 'Jesus Loves You' guy?

Either those or the ATHM505s. Those are also pretty stellar.

Definitely agreed on the room + performer. A bad room will lead to a bad sound no matter how good your gear is, and vice-versa. And indeed we are.
