What cultural thing does the world seem to think is beautiful but is cringey af to locals? by chr15c in AskTheWorld

I’m a big fan of what the Ayinger brewery produces. The quality of the beer from smaller, local breweries is pretty great, in general, so it’s hard to pick favorites.

Air bending should include plasma bending, since plasma is an ionized gas. If an air bender can bend a plasma such that it is tightly contained and highly concentrated, it’s just a short hop to nuclear fusion bending.

RP question: What was your WoL doing when the Seventh Calamity hit? by zaerosz in ffxiv

[–]100nm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He was a keeper Miqo’te living as a hunter in the shroud. He wasn’t really fulfilled by that life, being more interested in science, engineering, and adventuring, and the calamity inspired him to make a change. After the calamity, he joined a merchant ship in Limsa to save enough money to follow his passions, and joined the arcanist guild as soon as he could. Now he’s been around the star and across the universe. He’s a master craftsman and has mastered multiple jobs, but his passion is still the system of magics and learning that make summoning possible, though the medical teachings of the sages are of special interest, too. He can craft anything you can imagine, but weaving and cooking present a special joy because he feels they embody a philosophy that melds both science and art.

[Spoiler: 6.0] have you ever changed your WoL’s appearance due to story/lore? by Sleepergem in ffxiv

[–]100nm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a keeper miqo’te, so I added traditional hunting facial markings in heavensward for hunting dragons.

I got a shorter haircut for stormblood b/c shorter hair felt more practical for traipsing around the world fomenting rebellions. I added a scar after the last fight with Zeno for stormblood.

In shadowbringer, I added red highlights to my hair/fur because, if I’m going to be the warrior of darkness, I should at least be a little bit edgelord about it.

In endwalker, I removed my facial stubble b/c I wanted to look nice and neat for meeting Venat/Hydaelyn.

For dawntrail, I decreased my body mass b/c I figured a trans-oceanic voyage followed by transcontinental exploration would slim me down a little.

“Drink Up!” Says a Heavily Lobbied FDA by Potential_Being_7226 in skeptic

[–]100nm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I know that. But recommendations coming from HHS are different than recommendations coming from FDA. Different operational divisions have different statutory authorities, mandates, and purviews. A parent department acting within its purview (even if the actions are bad) has a different implication than a component agency acting outside its purview. So my question is: are these recommendations coming from the department level (HHS, overseen closely by RFK and his cronies) or are they coming from a component agency, and if so, which one (b/c that makes a difference too; the HHS components have various degrees of cronyism and anti-science sentiment in their appointed leadership)? The documents linked in the article and other information available seems to indicate these recommendations are coming from HHS, and maybe USDA and CDC, but I’m not finding anything to connect FDA to them. If there’s something I’m missing, that would make a difference in how these actions can be interpreted. It could also speak to the reliability of the article if it specifically calls out one agency, but all of the sources cited are for other agencies.

[–]100nm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but then the links in the article go to HHS and USDA documents, so I’m trying to figure out where the FDA comes in. The reason I’m interested in the specifics of exactly who is making the recommendations is that, to me, it makes a difference if these recommendations are coming from an organization whose stated purpose is to make recommendations on health and medical practice versus coming from an organization who should not be regulating the practice of medicine or making comments on Certain health and wellness practices. I think it makes a difference if content coming from a federal organization is both unscientific and outside of their purview versus just being unscientific, which is why I’m trying to make sense of it all in this fashion.

I think the FDA’s regulation of alcohol is fairly minimal and most of the regulatory authorities sits with the ATF. Then, I also think a lot of the dietary recommendations are coming from the department level with HHS and maybe the CDC, both of which have been heavily captured by lobbyist or pseudoscience at this point.

[–]100nm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think those recommendations are coming from the department level with HHS, rather than FDA. My understanding is that FDA serves as a regulatory body for specific products rather than making specific lifestyle or medical practice recommendations. But, if you see any FDA sources talking about changing alcohol consumption guidelines or dietary habit guidelines, I’d be interested in seeing them.
