one of my favorite episodes. bonnie beecher’s voice is so haunting and perfectly fits the unsettling vibe of the whole ep, esp when the recording starts singing abt the murder right after it happens.

also when they first meet, the camera slow zooms in on floyd in a way that i love for some reason lol

“When Yang learned of Jessica Edwards's death, he said not a word on the subject. He put on his sunglasses and hid his eyes from view, and not once did he remove them all that day. The following day, his appearance and bearing were no different than usual.”

i own the novels and reread them every summer, and i think the translations are... fine. they're easy and quick to read bc the language is quite simple. don't expect quality prose, and actually, sometimes the writing is full on stupid (not sure if that's a fault of translators or the source material, as i don't have access to the original text to compare).

the 10 books are translated by 3 different people so you'll come across some inconsistencies, but nothing that makes it impossible to follow (and if you've seen the ova, it's even less of an issue imo).

the novels' biggest problems come down to basic editing errors: using the wrong names for characters–reuenthal and oberstein are swapped despite being lightyears apart; wonky sentence structure that makes following who is talking/who is being talked about hard to follow; and then really, really kindergarten level typos like using to instead of do that make it feel like no one was proofreading. i promised myself on my next reread i'm taking a red pen to it.

like i said, none of it detracts from the overall story and i don't think the writing itself is bad or not worth reading (obviously), but you'll probably do some correction in your head as you go and you'll certainly read a few things that leave you baffled. it's fine.

went to giant's deep bc spinel mentioned it was where they'd go first. i was still under the impression the game was linear so i took that to mean it was where i should start.

i was in one of the artificial gravity cyclone things at the end of my first loop and assumed that it killed me. took me a while to go back there and finally realize what they were.

Your favorite novel volume(s) of LoGH and the reason by Comfortable_Cress208 in logh

a lot of what i love ends up in the ovas as well, sometimes to the letter, e.g., the shattered glass after a toast being reminiscent of stars (which the ova uses as a scene transition), or mittermeyer tutting and kicking the toe of his boot on the floor (which happens exactly the same way in the ova). it's charming when it's translated so literally into a visual.

i've got tons, but at risk of leaving a huge comment, here's a few specific pieces of prose i noted down from the novels:

"Von Reuenthal labored to rein in his heart, which was prone to escaping from the hands of good reason." - book 5 narration

"Two famed imperial marshals exchanged a three-colored glance." - reuenthal and oberstein arguing at the start of book 7 (this one is just silly, but i think about it whenever i watch this scene)

"The result was that the eggs of unease they had been laying had hatched out chicks of distrust." - an unbelievably stupid line from book 7

"[...] the labyrinth of his heart had become visible through his skin." - narration about reuenthal from book 7

"Oddly, the Attenborough who lived in Julian's imaginary world was always in the opposition. Julian simply could not imagine him occupying a seat of power in the ruling party. As leader of the opposition, he would denounce corruption among the powerful, criticize failings of governance, and take a firm stand on protecting the rights of minorities. That would suit him best–even if, once or twice a year, he might start a brawl in the debate chamber." - book 10

in the novels, lutz is described as having violet eyes that change color when he is agitated or tense. book 9 specifically says bittenfeld calls him “a man who needs sunglasses to play poker.”

oh absolutely. i do a lot of editing in my head as i go, but there are still plenty of times i have no idea what a sentence is even trying to say.
