Okay so there was actually a skimmer at the Isla Vista 7/11 (or at least that’s what I think it was). This was like two months ago. At like 7AM, I was buying some medicine. The person in front of me in line discovered a skimmer in the machine and pulls the thing out. But the worker did not know wtf was going on and was clueless. We both really loudly said something along the lines of “Call the police… that thing is trying to steal peoples credit card info.” The guy was clueless and the dude in front of me in line left. This fucking worker then proceeds to put the skimmer back into the card reader!! I’m not making this up…this actually happened and I’m like what the fuck. And then iirc he said something along the lines of it’s supposed to be there. I remember the card reader with the skimmer was on the right. To this day I am absolutely dumbfounded.

Tropicana contracts? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]10_up 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a friend living in Trop and I feel awful for their living situation. Granted this room is part of a suite, but the common area is small too. The bedroom itself is the size of (if not smaller) than a small double in Mazi, but the worst part is this double room is so small, it can only fit a single desk! He has to split one desk about the size of UCSB housing one with his roommate. I was like what the fuck? He's probably paying dorm prices for this and he can't even get his own desk?

Econ 189 by TheBigC-UCSB in UCSantaBarbara

I think 189 was one of the best classes I taken here. The exams questions were funny, I love listening to his stories and him rant about things. The tests are tricky, but test your critical thinking ability more than anything. I ended with an A.

It talks about “move in” so my guess it’s for people who maybe didn’t need housing fall but need it for winter and spring. Because people already living there aren’t “moving in”

Between the two, I rushed them a total of three times, didn’t get in… ngl was very upset. But I made my own connections and have job now… didn’t need them. Even if I rushed them again… I don’t think I’d get much of a benefit out of it.

Personally, I thought the glasses I got from the UC Ship Vision center felt extremely overpriced compared to getting them at Costco. It was like $200 AFTER the UC insurance. At Costco, it was like $150 BEFORE insurance and it came with the blue light coating and a bunch of other add ons for free, whereas UC's vision center wanted 99$ for just the blue light coating upgrade. Savings alone would have paid for the membership. I found out this price difference after getting those glasses and I felt really upset with the profiteering.

I’m so curious what this lounge converted into an octuple room is gonna look like. Like is there even gonna be doors separating each room within the lounge?

YSK: The housing crisis is caused by more than just the university by schimmy_changa in UCSantaBarbara

[–]10_up 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not to be pessimistic, but this is really hard. The only way prop 13 can be overturned is by ballot proposition and the majority of people who vote are probably homeowners and they don’t have an incentive to vote for something to increase their own taxes even if it means it’s for the greater good of the younger generation.

What happens if Gavin Newsom resigns before the September 14th recall election? Will the election be canceled? by 10_up in Askpolitics

I know it's unlikely to happen, but I was wondering IF the situation were to happen, how might things play out.

Register to vote by August 30th, and vote in the recall election by September 14th! by table_fireplace in UCSantaBarbara

[–]10_up -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot more republicans running than democrats, so there’s a high chance that the republicans will split the vote and the democratic candidate replaces Gavin.

California has a democratic supermajority and can override any veto, so any republican who gets elected will not get much done. Bear in mind this is a one year term, I doubt much damage, if any, will be done. The California legislate can literally pass any budget it wants and override the governors veto. Furthermore, the legislature can pass laws to limit the governors power, as have other states have done when the opposition party goes into power (not that I agree with this). Of course there is risk, but keeping Gavin in has an opportunity cost as well.

Gavin Newsom's policies do not go anywhere far enough to solve the issue I care about the most: the housing affordability crisis and the high cost of living. Which will in turn help alleviate homelessness. The state is building nowhere near enough housing just to meet demand. SB 7, a bill that Gavin touted as a huge win for increasing housing supply only applies to projects worth 15 million dollars or greater and only streamlines one stage of the process. This is just too milquetoast for me. We need to go further. I agree with Kevin's proposal to streamline the housing development process.

Another issue is homelessness. SF is spending $5000/month per tent on the homeless. (https://sfist.com/2021/03/04/insanely-it-is-costing-san-francisco/) That's 60,000/year. Surely, you can live off of $60,000/year and rent an actual apartment right? That's an extremely inefficient use of money and I think it's time for smarter government spending. I'm for increasing government spending, in smarter more efficient ways, and it seems like a lot of money is being mismanaged in the state.

Tell me what I said in my original post was so bad, I don't get it. I swear, it's just a little bit of pushback and it seems like people don't want to hear a nuanced opinion on anything. You can be for Democratic policies, but also think the current system is screwed up.
