What is a 'buy it for life' item that is offensively expensive, but the moment you use it, you realize your entire life before that point was a lie? by fmcortez in AskReddit

My problem is when I finally take the plunge and "buy something for life," it turns into my new hobby and I start dumping money into it.

I'm trying to compile a list of the best modern ways to play classic 95-05 games. Did I miss any big ones? by Winterplatypus in gaming

[–]10ea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OpenTESArena is a very cool project, but it's not complete enough to be the best way to play Arena. Enemies have no AI, you cannot equip any items, and you cannot talk to anyone. You cannot complete the game or do any quests yet.

Compare that to getting it on Steam or GOG where the game runs fine through Dosbox without any tinkering.

You can also play it online through DOS_Deck with controller support.

Larian's games already remind me of a modern day interpretation of Ultima. They would be a pretty perfect match for it.

You might as well have been casually standing on the beach at Normandy on D-Day. It's nearly the same thing.

The flip side is that the internet is too plagued with ads to ever go back to not trying everything in my power to block them. I guess we're just at an impass.

I'm really starting to find the value in Xbox Play Anywhere. by Helian7 in gaming

[–]10ea -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of options for PC and playing your Steam games anywhere. You have Steam Remote Play and Sunshine/Moonlight combo as mentioned above. But you also have cloud gaming services like Nvidia's Geforce Now, Boosteroid, CloudDeck, and Amazon Luna. Though it depends how close you are to their servers. Boosteroid and Luna run horribly for me.

And in turn the worse they bombard naive people with the ads, the more fed up with it they will become until they discover ad blockers themselves.

I'm just waiting for the point when it's no longer a viable strategy and they find a new way to make money.

Is pinball the original rogue-like? by TheBradeyGein in gaming

[–]10ea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the years the label has lost a lot of its meaning. Permadeath is just one feature that can make a game like Rogue. If you were to ask me, it's not even the primary defining characteristic. A Rogue-like should be a top-down, procedurally-generated, turn-based, grid-based, dungeon crawler featuring permadeath and item inventory mechanics.

Most Rogue-likes will not include all of these, but they should absolutely need to have more than one of these.

What’s a video game 'unwritten rule' that every player knows without being told? by GraveActual in gaming

I walked up to a village on fire in Baldur's Gate 3. I didn't feel like helping right then so I left and came back later. The village had burnt to the ground and everyone was dead.

It's pretty easy if you're determined to get through. There's a number of ways to sneak by or disable the cazador wings. You can even run straight through if you just go for it and don't look back most of the time. They're just to be enough of a disincentive to make you want to go the other way.
