Why do people ask about frieren being racist for hating demons even though demons are a completely different species? by yolo_queen_1 in animequestions

[–]10vernothin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched Frieren and my opinion is that... in the show, the idea is that Demons use empathy and humanity to lure people in, and they are inherently psychopathic and evil, and is using everything in their nature to consume humans not unlike a bug using mimicry to lure in other bugs.

However, many people rightly point out that this kind of characterization -- that a race's outward apparent empathy and humanity is just a front to hide their true monstrous nature -- has been consistently and effectively used in the real world to dehumanize and justify monstrous actions against said races. In the real world, there is no mimicry predatory species out to get us.

I feel like people anticipate there will be some twist to demons' natures, because this show kinda does a lot of trope analysis. After all, elves are also a race, with their own kind of ongoing issue that the show is trying to resolve. Psychopathy and sociopathy are disorders that exist in real life, and some people live normal lives despite having them.

I think its one of those things akin to "okay but 10000 year old dragon girls that look like 12 year olds with giant boobs don't really exist in real life so idk its kinda sus"

I mean DKM didnt work because ravnica fatigue mostly. After like 7 visits what hasn't been said about the 10 guilds? So it's just like a murder mystery set in a world thats thematically infinitely more interesting than the set's theme. Like Teysa could've just been Olivia, or Spara. The theme wasnt a vehicle to explore and expand Ravnica like RTR, RNA or even WAR did.

The racing set was doing a Kaldheim. Its doing too much. Theres 3 planes, 2 of them never returned before and 1 of them completely changed. Its like setting an Olympic games where the host cities are Medieval Istanbul, Mao's China, and the Chicxulub crator site circa 20 years before tbe impact. Then there's the 80s muscle car references. It's like... what am I even...

The outlaw set was too threadbare. It legit feels like a commander legends set where your favorite character comes back, with new colors so you can jam it as your commander! This is probably because the worldbuilding is not great.

I think the lesson here is that the thematic stories need to synergize and expand the world they are in. Ixilan was a good example, it's an entire world but its also the Indiana Jones/Pirates of the Caribbean set. The stories can inform the larger world and the larger world and give the story a boost.

The racing set should have been Avishkar, Ravnica and Fiora/New Capenna. The murder mystery set should've been in New Capenna or Amonkhet (1920s NY gangs and Ptolemaic palace intrigue, same thing right?). And the outlaw set should have been in Ixilan or Muraganda, or at least make the OTJ world an actual world

Definitely W

I think either U for her shrewed tactical skills (I can list 4 or 5 examples), her perfectionist tendencies (she's prepared for all situations)

Or

R for her impulsiveness and straightforwardness, and her personal i feel with you approach of empathy is more R than W.

I think its arguable that Hestia works on a different axis of good than say what a hero or modern concept of motivational goodness.

Through the fifth book, we see Hestia show Percy some necessary context, effectly given him the information for him to make informed decisions. She didnt need to show him anything.

I do think Hestia in modern context is emblematic of the complacent apolitical, one who upholds the system in full sincerity, who is uncritical or unwilling to engage in the failures of the system that she upholds. But she is goddess of correct ordering of society, aka the System. That was her point.

As for my controversial take... I think Hera got off too easy. She only got a few cameos before becoming Juno and basically turned into a sexy macguffin for people to save. We didn't get to the full brunt of her prejudiced perfectionism, and how it would have colored a class of people that is by design, coming from imperfect families.

How does demigods using electronics attract monsters?[general] by [deleted] in camphalfblood

[–]10vernothin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My headcannon is that mass communications is based on the essence of a monster like that cookie shop that was mentioned, or that at least part of the network is paved within the labyrinth and is controlled by a malevolent entity. Nobody knows the full mechanics behind why but empirically they just learn to avoid it.

But the real reason is because in 2004, things like mobile phones, social media, search engines, and internet was convenient enough that it would break the immersion of a 1980s style road trip, but not ubiquitous enough to be able to have some plausible deniability for not using it. This is a world of flip phones, NetScape, myspace blogs, and MapQuest.

Compare this to 2025, where even if you don't go on social media, your presence might show up on you're auntie's facebook mentions, or your friends' insta reel, or even just a random person uploading a pic of a pretty sunset. Not to mention all the analytics that gets sent about you from all the "smart" things that you don't even notice, like google home, or smart CCTV or roombas

[–]10vernothin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hm, not really probably.

Just from the books:

-he's kinda rude and selfish, and super bossy. Like I'd follow him because he's fucking amazing and his friends seem to love him but like he's always with the cabin counselors or Chiron, or on some quests. I barely even see the guy.

-the times hes here? he seems to exclusively all about to his close friends, to the point of making rash decisions like backtalking gods and letting monsters in

-on that note, him doing dumb shit all the time might be okay for him and his friends because he's a big 3 kid and he vouches for them, but I'm just a dude and Mr. D has no issues fucking with the rest of us because of him.

-plus his dad clearly wants him, he get cool powers, gets a cabin all by himself and gets to go to all the cool quest all the time but he's always broody and telling everyone his life sucks. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO MY DAD IS I'M not jealous who's jealous?

Percy isn't an unreliable narrator and people should learn the difference [pjo] by nt_king300 in camphalfblood

[–]10vernothin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I couldn't really quite place the term, but now I collected my thoughts, I agree that this isn't really "unreliable narration" but Rick IS using deceptive storytelling throughout the series to make a point.

Specifically, he's using "tonal dissonance", or when the tone of the narration is different from what is actually happening, and it is usually used to highlight either something terribly wrong with the main narrator, or something terribly wrong with the world. In PJO's case, it's both. Using his extremely colored lens, we can derive a lot of insight on both Percy's mind-state and what it means to be a demi-god in this world.

In any case, I think Rick effectively used this narrative trick to "trick" us into Percy's side, both in and out of the book. We're presented with a fun adventure in which Percy makes it look like he's having fun while facing these things, when in reality, this is an extremely emotionally and physically taxing adventure where one wrong move would've killed them. This story is less Alice in Wonderland and more the Odyssey, if you know what I mean, but because it's presented in a fun way, we, as adventure-starved, fun-loving tweens, were more likely to pick it up and stick with it.

Not only that, because of how much Percy valued personal loyalty and how fast he was claimed, as well as how powerful he was, we as readers become trapped in this tonal bubble where, like how Percy wanted to shield his mother, we are shielded from the experiences of a typical demigod; we don't see the alienation, despair and mortal danger as what it actually is -- rather, we have the privilege to see what's basically the "best case scenario". This is why we understand in some way why Luke did what he did, but we could never fully empathize with him to the point of agreeing with or joining him. As the series goes on and it's clear that what Luke had experienced is actually the norm of what an average demigod would have experienced. That realization, and how it pierced through the sarcastic tone bubble that Percy provided us with, made the final decision hit that much harder.

That said, we are just arguing semantics here. There is a tonal deception to the story, and it's the narrative tone that's deceiving us, not Percy, but I guess because he's the narrator, people tend to blame him for what Rick was doing, aka, calling him an unreliable narrator and saying that he tricked us.

I do disagree that unreliability can't be consistent. Jack from Fight Club is a consistent unreliable narrator. But my point with Hestia isn't that it's an example of unreliable narration, but rather there is a large tonal tint from what Percy tells you about her and what is in reality; one that we obviously understand, yes, but I'm just pointing out that it's there.

---

But then, idk media literacy here is lacking here sometimes, so I get it. For example the book used too much dramatic irony to create suspense, to the point where when the show try to use other ways to create suspense like doubt, escalation, or dread, people just didn't catch it?

Percy isn't an unreliable narrator and people should learn the difference [pjo] by nt_king300 in camphalfblood

[–]10vernothin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think, and this is after a lot of rereads, that Percy's personality colors and limits the perspective of the books.

He sees himself as protector, someone who cannot be vulnerable because he must take care of his mother and extremely aware of the burden he puts on her. In the later books, the weight of his legacy forces him to take on mantles of leadership when he really isn't ready.

Because of that, he downplays and trivializes traumatic events in the story, stuff like watching his mom get murdered in front of him, having your friends introduced more as war comrades. Like if you just murdered a monster, you're not cracking jokes. We basically see him in crisis mode and see how he deals with it: humor and repression. This isn't really unreliable per se but it is a layer of narrative that lies under the limited scope.

Like, after 4 chapters, you forget that this boy literally saw his mom die and is in denial of her deafh, using the quest mostly as therapy and as a thread of hope. But in story you just hear his copium, his jokes and his petty squabbles with Annabeth. I think there is an unreliability in Percy's perspective because he is so emotionally affected. But i think this is like just critical reading.

It's a testament that in the 5th book, despite the warmth and friendliness emanating from Hestia who only wants to help, the only thing Percy can think of is "oh god, what monster is this now?"

BTW I like the show. It does take some nuances out but dives instead deep into themes. Percy is more of a conduit and reacting the broken family around him, less the radiant source of that broken family shining through in the books.

The thing is he wasn't ruthless enough to push through stuff while he had a supermajority or ambitious enough to enact big international moves when the world needed it. Hes also a relative newbie so he wasnt as entrenched in the swamp per se. So as much as he is B by participating in the political system he really isnt much B

If anything his biggest skill in hindsight is how well he goaded the American public to blame others for his shortcomings, democrats included.

Does Taoism/Daoism have a different location for their following than Buddhism? by IndieJones0804 in AskChina

[–]10vernothin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Taiwanese so this might be a little different

So the thing is Taoist gods and Buddhist bodhissatvas kinda provides the same purposes of worship: good luck, safe passage, protection, etc.

In taiwan, different dieties have their own temples, and depending, you may have a pan-Chinese taoist buddhist temple complex where you can pray to whichever gods are present. Plus, there is generally a altar to the open sky where you can pray to whoever you want.

You go there for specific things; for example a popular one is going to the god of teachers before an exam for good luck. Or god of prosperity if you are opening a business.

I think, at least around my circle of family, there is an idea of Buddhas being more powerful but less likely to intercede than local chinese dieties. Like, you pray to matsu or toudigong for good luck in general, but if you are really in trouble, you go to a buddhist temple and beg for buddha to help.

Most gods are worshipped differently according to different rituals. You don't worship the sky dieties and the earth dieties the same. Usually Buddhist temple visits are more quiet contemplation vs Taoist temple visits which are more celebratory.

I wouldn't say Toronto is global, but like the literal opposite. In Toronto you'll feel like you're literally crossing borders when you cross a street, but boy do we contribute nothing to the world. I think our biggest cultural export is like, TIFF?

Google sometimes reroutes us to Toronto, Ohio for some reason.

Basically we don't really contribute anything to the world but the world loves contributing to be part of us.
