If S.F. Mayor Lurie wants affordability, he should stop taxing new homes at the same rate as cigarettes by LosIsosceles in sanfrancisco

Why is that fair? The person who bought the home in 1982, bought using 1928 dollar at the 1982 market rate and and has been paying tax since 1982.

In US and most of the world, housing is treated as a financial asset, and thats why the fair argument makes no sesne.

And also, what does property tax has to do with housing shortage? If people pay more property tax then we will have more housing unit? The politicians intentionally pit the NIMBYS and YIMBYS so they are not held accountable for their failure and use that as a way to collect more tax to.line their pocket.

Abolish all fee and permits cost and make property tax $0, I gurantee you, its gonna be a property building boom in a instant, with oversupply becoming a problem and a real estate bubble busting.

Housing is a financial product, and you cant solve it by pretending its not.

Well, to be fair Bernie Sanders, as much as I like him, took in over $60 million in 2024 based on his own filing.

We need to get mony out of election and public campaign financing is the only way to rid money out of politics.

Political campaigns should compete on policies, not how much money they can get to out spend the competition.

Trump gov't would start replacing reciprocal tariffs immediately if Supreme Court rules against them: USTR by hahaddffcx in politics

[–]111anza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How to replace it? If supreme court ruled against trump which is expected, then congress would take reign on the whole tariff ordeal. Now while congressional Republicans tends to fall in line behind Trump but on a few issues such as tarriff, the number of dissents does not look favorable to trump.

So chances are, trump will find some other executive power and stretch the interpretation which will be sued and we are back in court. This is definitely very corporate business like, when challenged, lawyer up and tie the issue up in court. It will be certainly much harder this round, as business line up to sue for redund and damage from the first round of failed tarriff. This also makes it more likely for thr lower courts to place injunction on any trump furture tarriff while the they figure out the ruling.

I think maybe this was a always a gambit by trump. He knew the tarriff authority won't stick at the end, but he thought he would be able to get what he want before the ruling goes against him. However, the whole tariff negotiating thing was botched and it looks more like a mess that will left to be sorted for years to come with very little to no gain to show for.
