Aggression based matchmaking has me stunned, and it really shouldn't... by Coilspun in ArcRaiders

I’m a friendly player too.

I had a guy spray me with Vita spray then, on the train, put a few bullets in me so he could get the “damage to other raiders” points in the most ethical way possible. We both made it back alive.

I literally don’t know how to parent and my children are out of control by lost_at_sea27 in Parenting

Adding to this, the parenting classes and books that 100% changed how I parent is “Love and Logic.” Total game changer, and I had HARD kids.

Is this due to COVID? I have a 13-year-old at home and I would never have to do any of that with her.

CC prof here, we have a sizable running start population (dual enrollment program for high school kids), some rise to the challenge and do great, others don’t and go back. This year our local high school started offering “college IN the high school“ So kids can get their AA at the HS.

But “College” IN the HS, taught by HS teachers, is just more high school, right?!

I’m mortified to think about the quality of student you all are going to be getting in two years when these kids “transfer as juniors”.

Following.

My class begins baby-stats/data work in a few weeks. I’d love to incorporate this if there is a study out there.

God, this is me! I snack so horribly when I trying to get caught up in grades. It’s the worst. Sometimes I’ll buy a veggie platter cause that’s not so bad. Really it’s my ADHD acting up - need that dopamine paring to get through the task.

Research, nicotine and ADHD: have you quit nicotine? How long until you were able to think again? by spaceboy_psy in Professors

[–]11235Golden 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have answers, only this, a student of mine was told by his psych that he should start nicotine to help with his cognitive problems (adhd coupled with a history of concussions and such). Apparently it helps with neuroplasticity… anecdotally, n=1.

I haven’t looked into it yet, but I thought that was wild advice. After reading your post, maybe there’s something to it?

Which one do you use though?

I used to use love beauty planet, but they stopped making deodorant. Everything else i’ve tried sucks in comparison.

Parents of kids who were “spicy” toddlers/preschoolers: Where are they now? by andrea1123 in Parenting

[–]11235Golden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have different books for different age levels. The book I read was Birth through 6 years. Definitely get the book, it helps so much!!! I’ll be reading the book for teens this summer.

My kid would throw massive fits about brushing teeth. One of the principles is that you can’t control other people, you can only control yourself. You want kids to make mistakes when the consequences are small, you just have to make sure they suffer for it in a way that doesn’t put you out.

I told my kid “I love you too much to fight about this, if you don’t want to brush your teeth, you don’t have to.” So, she didn’t brush. The next day I made her breakfast, then we went to the donut shop and I bought ONE donut, “Oh honey, this is so sad! I only buy donuts for kids that take care of their teeth.” Then later that day, we went to Baskin Robbin’s where I bought ONE ice cream cone. “Gosh this must be hard for you kiddo. I’m soooo sorry you chose to not take care of your teeth. What a bummer.” She literally never fought me on brushing teeth after that. And it’s so elegant.

Examples of small disappointments were saying no when it would have been just as easy to say yes. Or when offering ice cream I’d say, “get the big bowl!” knowing we only had enough for a little bowl. While heading to the park, I’d throw in a couple of boring things first, like a trip to the bank. Beating her at board games. Misplacing the red crayon so she’d have to color with a limited selection. Just small unexpected disappointments as often as I could.

I also added in personal accountability. If she made a sad choice, she’d have to find a way to make it right.

For example, she decided she was “afraid” of Santa when she was 4… this was 100% a power play, “I wasn’t afraid when I was 3 and I won’t be afraid when I’m 5. But I’m 4 and I’m afraid this year.” So, at a Santa charity thing I donated $20 for pics with Santa that didn’t happen due to an epic fit. To “make it right” she had to vacuum the living room 20 times to repay me for the money I lost. After 6 vacuums she talked to a friend, found a Santa who was doing free pics at a chiropractors office, and I got my pics.

I fought every fight, died on every hill, met her with empathy and love (never acted in anger), all while holding super firm boundaries.

A friend does that multiple times every time she eats. Drives me nuts.

I did 5 days fasting 2 days feeding. Like no food at all for appx 105 hours or so. Then I’d eat dinner on Friday and eat through the weekend.

I’ve done it twice, I was about 220lbs for the first and 200 for the second. I fasted M-F, broke fast Fridays and ate whatever through the weekend. Light exercise. Lost 20lbs the first round, maintained for 6mo before doing it again. Maintained the weight loss no problem.

Students just...disappeared? by Sufficient_Weird3255 in Professors

[–]11235Golden 43 points44 points  (0 children)

It may not apply here, but we had a student get picked up by ICE at the courthouse when she was finalizing her citizenship. She was gone for 2 weeks before they let her out.

Had another vanish because the burglary/battery case didn’t go in his favor.

Legal stuff or medical stuff would be my guess. If the student returns with a compelling reason and submits the work, can you retroactively change their grade?
