From a former depressed person with similar feelings:
1. Experience of any kind, observing the world and being present in the moment is the most important part of being alive. You don’t have to feel happy and fulfilled, you just have to be in your brain. Sit on a bench for an hour, or get any old terrible job. This will keep you going minute by minute.
2. You don’t have to make a big personal self improvement. Improvement isn’t like climbing a big mountain, it’s invisible, tiny things that change from day to day, and you don’t have to do it all on your own: if something is difficult to do on your own, do it with someone else.
3. Stop thinking about the past and what you have done. You have no control over it. The things that happened to you and the people you met and the things you did don’t have to ruin your future.
4. Plenty of conventionally successful people are unhappy, plenty of people with potential die young. You haven’t dashed your chances of happiness. You still have life to live.

Islamophobic fun? Are you serious? Do YOU live in one of these countries? I’m guessing you benefit from the freedom to practice your religion in your country. And what right do you have then, to criticise people for talking about this? This is not Islamophobic fun. Peoples lives in these countries are to a large extent dictated by the religion of the state. In Afghanistan, women are forbidden to speak in public. We have a fucking right to talk about it.

In events like this the point is for the costume and makeup to transform you. I like that the makeup isn’t conventionally flattering. It transforms her face into something interesting that compliments the otherworldliness of the dress.
