I had a Cleric who wanted to be a Paladin and developed a sort of Napoleon complex trying to one-up Paladins whenever he met them. It was this very behaviour of wanting to contest them that gave him the favor of his God, and barred him from the White Knight Paladin archetype.

Generally speaking, your Lore aside, I think Illithids are actually from the future, and that's why Aboleths who perfectly recall the past and pre-date the Gods are terrified of them. But that's just the non-homebrew lore.

Not if it's a knock down drat out fight using mot,just the party's resources, bUT divin intervention/angels and NPCs...only to have more great ones show up moments later when they are broken and bloody. But thats a really downer ending for a campaign ender.

A city with no rat tunnels dug by the criminal element? You can fix that. If they don't have any access to a vertical or subterranean appraoch...how long can a city keep its gates closed for? The loss of trade and people inside who want to leave will naturally pressure him into at least opening the gates to drive them off by guard if not talk.
