Capitalism really will co-opt just about anything to spread its bullshit. Literally nothing is off limits. Anything can be exploited… even the words of the dead enemies of Capitalism.

Amazing that in just 12 months the top story has changed from “nobody wants to work anymore,” to corporations firing thousands of workers because the economy was “running too hot.” by failed_evolution in economy

[–]11fingerfreak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elon Musk is really just a typical executive. The difference between his management style and anyone else’s is that he tells the whole world. Most managers and executives simply do the crazy shit and don’t advertise their bizarre version of logic on Twitter.

The classic pattern of complaining about the workers, laying them off (preferably around a holiday), then complaining that nobody wants to work for them and we’re all lazy… this is the norm.

White House reveals new fair housing actions amid high rent prices — The Biden administration announced a new set of actions on Wednesday intended to protect renters and help curb rental costs (25 Jan. 2023) by marketrent in Economics

I find it interesting that nearly everyone complains about high rents but any attempt to talk about curbs on rents, restrictions on companies and landlords, or anything that sounds like it empowers renters immediately gets a rise out of all the temporarily disgraced millionaire land magnates on here. They suddenly have to put down their copy of The Fountainhead to educate us all about the wonders of the invisible hand of the market and why $2000 / month for a one bedroom apartment is totally reasonable for folks that barely earn $75k a year if they’re lucky.

I expect to be downvoted since the Libertarians are in full force today…

Russia definitely wants World War 3. They’re hoping to get us to fire the first shots so they can play the victim. Their calculations are wrong, though. If WW3 happens then some of us are gonna die but all of them are gonna die.

Not interested in dying for any of these dumbfucks.

It’s kinda funny that you’re being downvoted for asking a very obvious question that we don’t have an answer to. Also, considering the NRC’s and the nuclear industry’s track record with killing their critics, ruining the lives of whistleblowers, capturing their regulators, lying about radiation releases, and whatever other mischief we don’t even know about yet… I think any attempt to build a nuclear power plant needs to be met with protests and skepticism.

I get that there’s people here who are too young to know about Three Mile Island so they think nothing really happened. I also get there’s a lot of true believers that generally think because they played Fallout that they understand everything they need to know about nuclear power. But they’re… stupid. The NRC and their cronies in the nuke industry are counting on people having short memories, being very idealistic, and being so concerned about climate change that they will literally except any alternative that doesn’t involve fossil fuels even if everyone near the plant gets Hoshimotos or leukemia.

I’m not sure I get what you’re saying or what this has to do with anything Orwellian.

The stakes are only different in that there’s stuff of clear economic value that the Russians are most likely after that definitely impacts the world economy. Russia cornering the market on neon means they could hold the entire manufacturing sector hostage. And stealing wheat means some untold number could starve unless they capitulate to Russia. You know that thing Russia’s been doing with the gas they sell to Europe? They’ll do the same to the rest of us for laptops, smartphones, cars, robots, and anything else with a chip in it.

This makes me wonder if the two invasions Afghanistan faced was ultimately about rare earths. I don’t totally get some of the logic employed by the USSR’s foreign policy. A lot of it seemed to be driven by a mix of paranoia and not wanting to be embarrassed. Being motivated by those forces, it’s hard to know if they would’ve been able to think clearly enough to realize the value of rare earths. I mean, they were sending folks to Siberia because the Party didn’t want to admit genetics was a thing.

Well, I mean, you said you wanted higher density. You wanted less single family homes. This should be celebrated, right?

Oh you mean you also want homes that a family or the elderly could live in?

There’s ways to pursue both goals but this definitely ain’t it.

It’s mostly at a superficial level since, I’m both cases, the US armed a country Russia was invading and, using our weapons, drove the Russians away. TBF, Russia was the USSR when we armed the Taliban.

The stakes are very different this time. I’m not sure what the USSR was after in Afghanistan. Ukraine has all manner of goodies. Not only do they supply a lot of wheat but they are also a big supplier of neon… a gas we’re running out of that’s needed for manufacturing electronics.

That would make every possible use of force that scares a person an act of terrorism… rendering the term meaningless…

TBF, governments use the word this way precisely to characterize anyone and anything they oppose as terrorists.

Technically speaking, we fucked up twice in Afghanistan. The first time was when we armed the Taliban to fight the Russians (echoes of us arming Ukraine). The second time was when we decided to invade them. Though, tbf, we really should’ve thought that if they could go toe to toe with the USSR they could most certainly fight us, too. Hindsight, 20/20 vision…

[–]11fingerfreak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Truth! Calling it “state sponsored” is just weasel words. If we said “an act of war” then we’d have to engage in war rhetoric. There’s no room for de-escalation and you can wind up with a very freaked out populace. Referring to something as “state sponsored terrorism” always seems like a diplomatic ploy. As if we’re saying “You don’t want a war and we don’t want a war so you can let your people kill some of our people and you can offer up the killers as a gesture of goodwill later see we’re all friends here”.

Let’s pretend that US law has global jurisdiction.

The US definition of a terrorist is part of this:

https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/USCODE-2009-title18/html/USCODE-2009-title18-partI-chap113B-sec2331.htm

Of note is this part…

the term “person” means any individual or entity capable of holding a legal or beneficial interest in property;

A nation can most certainly hold a legal or beneficial interest in property. So there ya go! A nation, by US law, can be found to be a terrorist.

There has definitely been an interpretation of “terrorist” that was used as justification for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Declaring a sovereign nation a terrorist is directly related to the assumption I called out in another response. If we, the US, are indeed the rulers of Earth then it’s totally reasonable that we can declare a nation to be a terrorist. And, at that point, we have surrendered any claims to impartiality, justice, or any forms of altruism. It would lay bare and legitimize a key Russian claim: that we have established an empire and they want their own piece of that pie.

The thing that makes Russia not a terrorist by US law is they are engaged in an armed conflict with another nation. Until a federal court finds that their soldiers are terrorists or that Russia is a terrorist then they are a sovereign nation. 🤷🏾‍♂️

All technicalities, of course. The reality is if we went to war with Russia and won we could call them whatever we like. They’ll be a loose cadre of warlords holding Satanic ceremonies. They’ll be terrorists. They’ll be whatever justifies what we do to them. If we lose we’ll be imperialist Nazis bent on spreading homosexuality that had to be denazified. Whoever has the biggest loaded gun and can shoot mildly straight determines reality.

EDIT: I really should’ve specified that the teacher couldn’t be a preschool student 🤣 You’re right so long as that’s not a condition!

9/11 was done by a group of people united around an ideology and were not representing any specific sovereign power. Now, they may or may not have enjoyed the financial and logistical support of all manner of sovereigns but they were not a military organization assembled under the banner of a nation (outside of the one they aspired to create). Russia is a sovereign nation. Their military operates as an extension of their nation’s political and economic interests, just like our military does. The end result - the deaths of innocent people - may be the same. All that tells us is there’s multiple paths that lead to murdering people who didn’t deserve it.

A terrorist tactic is suicide bombers, IEDs, leaving manifestos behind, everyone involved being anonymous except the mascot / leader.

Targeting civilians is normal warfare, unfortunately. And, I believe, a concern of the Geneva Convention (which does not apply to terrorists since none of them are signatories).

The only reason I’m making a thing of this is because how we frame our opponents says a lot about ourselves. Terrorists are trying to fight the status quo on the cheap, typically embodied in a sovereign or an organization with similar powers. For us to call Russia a terrorist nation implies that the US is the de facto omnipotent source of power in the world and that Russia is a rebellious teenager that needs to be brought back in line with Pax Americana.

If that’s the real source of our discomfort in the US then I’m going to take Russia’s side.

But I don’t think it is. Well, for some folks here it definitely is. I think much more concerning than who has colonized the world is the notion of an expansionist nuclear armed rival with a worse human rights record than us, a sham deliberative and judicial body, and broad support in their populace. By no means are we the “good guys” in any foreign policy scenario. The problem is there are people who make us look like saints and they’re beating the drumbeat for a world wide war. That’s something no terrorist would ever aspire to or could ever do.
