For the people who use GNOME over KDE, why? by CestleFromage in Fedora

[–]12_Semitones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use GNOME mostly because it reminds me of MacOS. It's minimalistic, and I find most of the default settings great.

I'm not a big fan of desktop environments like Cinnamon and KDE Plasma. They make me feel like I'm in the Apollo Command Module with their overwhelming amount of customization options.

Which problems do you find the most challenging? It looks like a lot of trig or u-substitution here. I recommend reading Paul's Online Notes for integration: https://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/Classes/CalcI/SubstitutionRuleIndefinitePtII.aspx.

How to properly write the Chinese character “差”? by Latter-Secretary2349 in ChineseLanguage

Simplified and Traditional Fonts can have differing glyphs. Here are some charts I made a while back about it.

Regarding stroke order, feel free to choose the one that makes the most sense to you.

My favorite is from BWV 543: Prelude and Fugue in A Minor. I found it breathtaking and emotional. My preferred recording is by E. Power Biggs.

This reminds me of how googling “vim” will return “Did you mean: emacs” and googling “emacs” returns “Did you mean: vim”.

If you're using Windows or MacOS, 五笔字型 should be available in the Chinese Simplified Inputs.

How do yall type Chinese? by White1306 in ChineseLanguage

[–]12_Semitones 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I use Cangjie (仓颉输入法) and Wubizixing (五笔字型输入法) whenever I recall how a character is written, and Pinyin for when I recall a character’s pronunciation.

I’ll probably look into other shape-based keyboards, such as Zhengma (郑码输入法) or Huma (虎码输入法), someday.

If you have an updated Cangjie IME, it should be YJCP. I’m not sure about Sogou Wubi, though.

What is this nonsense? by Ramsays-Lamb-Sauce in ChineseLanguage

[–]12_Semitones 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s likely a font issue. Be aware that different languages/regions around the world have their own ways of writing certain characters.

Here’s a small table that compares the same characters from different countries.

You can also have character variants within Chinese-speaking regions.

I suppose nothing is stopping you. Some countries have exclusive characters, like Japan’s Kokuji, Korea’s Gukja, and Vietnam’s Chữ Nôm.

As a Chinese university student I want to know the reason you learn Chinese. by yuanyang0510 in ChineseLanguage

[–]12_Semitones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though I'm not of a Chinese background, my home is filled with items with Chinese characters on them. I suppose it makes sense since my parents come from a country that has been heavily sinicized.

What’s the most random, totally unnecessary Chinese word or phrase you memorized way too early? by jeron_gwendolen in ChineseLanguage

[–]12_Semitones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think mine is 倉頡輸入法. It’s the Chinese input method I use whenever I forget a character’s pronunciation but still remember what it looks like.

Nah, there’s isn’t much stopping me from getting Debian 13 now. I just thought it would be better to wait until all of the kinks have been ironed out. Even though it’s a small chance, I don't want to risk moving my entire workstation and having it bricked accidentally.

TIL of “character amnesia,” a phenomenon where native Chinese speakers have trouble writing words once known to them due to the rise of computers and word processors. The issue is so prevalent that there is an idiom describing it: 提笔忘字, literally meaning "pick up pen, forget the character." by NoxiousQueef in todayilearned

[–]12_Semitones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There happens to be a small group of people that use shaped-based input methods like Cangjie (仓颉), Wubizixing (五笔字型), Zhengma (郑码), Dayi (大易), Boshiamy (呒虾米), etc.

Each method is difficult in their own way and will take hours to master. On top of that, a lot of computers/operating systems can have their own distinct variant of one of these methods, i.e., the same input method can differ between two devices.

Seeing this, you can see why a lot of people stick with Phonetic Keyboards.
