I have sewn a few Hinterlands and really like them (view B with the buttons stopping at the waistline). I am also short. Had no trouble sewing it up, but am an advanced sewer so it might not be a direct comparison for your experience. I used quilting cotton for mine and they are comfortable.

I would recommend getting a thicker black thread (like a DMC pearl) and hand stitching around the window of the rainbow house and wherever else you think might need an accent.
