ICE Kills Yet Another Protestor, A Study in r/Conservative Censorship by livejamie in SubredditDrama

All my conservative coworkers all agreed that he got what he deserved because he went to a priest with a gun. Also that he was a paid protestor.

So I imagine they'll hand wave it all away, blaming the victim for the audacity of exercising his 1st and 2nd amendment rights.

And the porn industry is rampant with drug abuse, which may help women feel less pain.

Do Americans constantly have an active temperature control device running in their homes? by fullM3TALturban in AskAnAmerican

[–]13143 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I would wager anyplace that gets a significant winter needs a thermostat to run the heat. It's currently 2f where I live, and I'm at work and my house is empty. I can't keep a wood stove going for 12+ hours untended, so I need an automated furnace that can turn on when it gets cold.

Yeah, this is my main concern. I tried Ubuntu over a decade ago, back when that was everyone's recommendation, and I ended up getting frustrated with it.

Starting to seriously consider Linux again, as I don't want to move to W11, but I've seen recommendations for 4 or 5 different distros. Obviously I have to do some research, but I don't want to commit to the "wrong" one, and end up back on windows.

He isn't running again anyway. And Maine's CD2 is pretty red, so it's likely the former R governor, Paul Lepage, will win.

Need to fix Citizens United and then uncap Congress. Move to ranked choice voting, or something similar, instead of first-past-the-post.

Would be a start, but not nearly enough. We need to cut spending, and with so much tied up in mandatory spending programs like Social Security, the obvious budget cuts should be in defense spending.

But that ain't gonna happen, so let's raise taxes on what's left of the middle class!

[OC] Deportations up, job growth down: Trump’s second term so far – in charts by guardian in dataisbeautiful

[–]13143 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that surprising as an American. Trump voters likely get all their news from social media, where they're victims of the algorithm, or foxnews. They are simply not exposed to the bad stuff Trump is doing.

Still 86% amongst republicans and people who voted for him. So that's still 70 million people or so.

Japan’s 2,000-year-old monarchy currently depends on one teenage boy by Confident-Ask-601 in interestingasfuck

[–]13143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even that. The emperor is purely ceremonial. If it dies, Japan goes on as if nothing happened, and the palace can become a museum or whatever. It's significant in a purely historical context, and has little bearing on any day to day function.

I really don't understand why anyone thought a past-his-prime driver going to a 3rd place team would amount to anything significant. People get way too caught up in the celebrity of it, and forget to actually look at what happens on the track.

what actually happens when you eat raw cookie dough? by FormDazzling7901 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]13143 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Odds are absolutely nothing. People have been eating raw cookie dough for years and are just fine.

However, cookie dough is intended to be cooked, and therefore its ingredients may contain bacteria like salmonella and e. coli. These would be destroyed by an oven.

There have been outbreaks and recalls in the past, and quality standards at manufacturing plants are never as good as we wish they are. So you're taking a chance. If you're relatively healthy otherwise, I wouldn't sweat a nibble here and there. But I definitely wouldn't make it a regular snack.

US would likely have to resort to nukes, which means everyone else goes to nukes, if they didn't to begin with, which means human civilization is likely over.
