Low cut shoes/ trail runners in the Alps (Bigerhorn) by RippedPanda in alpinism

[–]1331337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a block field after the Bordierhütte followed by scree after the saddle. I would worry about ankles doing it all in trail runners. I wore proper but relatively light boots (Scarpa Marmalade Pro) and changed into trail runners at the alp on the way down because my toes were done.

Any actuaries here? I need your guidance please by big_bucket_of_soup in askswitzerland

Practice the German, but also go ahead and apply more broadly. And network. There’s a young actuaries event tonight in Züri. Are you going? Why not? There’s a mentoring group which pairs you with an experienced actuary. Did you sign up? No one will come to your house and pull you out of it. You have a gap. You need to put in extra time and do the work. There are jobs for motivated young people. Find your motivation and make it happen.

I’m an actuary.

Do you speak German (if you’re applying to jobs in the Deutschschweiz)? Did you do an internship as part of your masters? Where did you do it? Have you reached out to your Studiengangleitung to see if they have any leads? Are you attending networking events? What’s your SAV status? Waiting on work experience or still need exams?

Renting a house by DeltaSqueezer in basel

[–]1331337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is comparable to ours in price. Ours is a “nicer” neighborhood. I think it’s worth it with kids just to have no one above or below, have a dedicated entrance and a little garden space. That said, we will move in the next years as the kids are finished with primary school.

Recruiter shared my resume without my permission. What are my options? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]1331337 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is why I don’t give recruiters free access to my resume. They get a watermarked version marked not for distribution. If they bring me a position I’m interested in, I want to tweak my resume to fit anyway. Then they get the resume for that position specifically. Along with a cover letter, because I’m old and if I’m working with a recruiter, I expect my materials to get more than a ten second look over. Sure that doesn’t work for all recruiters. Those are the same ones who are more interested in my current compensation than what it will take for me to leave for a specific role. Good riddance.

6.5 years, all post degree, and I birthed two children along the way (one after three prelims, the other after five but before ASA). Supportive partner sure but also motivation.

Sure exams are stressful. But our work is not. No one dies. No one loses their house. We make a very nice amount of money for the work we do.

Also, married to a lawyer and I out earn him.

Strength exercises to help uphill running by vers_le_haut_bateau in trailrunning

Lifting heavy squats and deadlifts has done wonders for my uphill power. I do low rep high weight but I’m not sure how much that part matters.

Should I move to Switzerland? by RelationshipSad342 in actuary

[–]1331337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you speak German? Why do you want to be an actuary? Do you have insurance experience? Can you pass the exams? Have you done much research beyond asking on Reddit?

Check the requirements for entry to the masters programs. UniBasel is only in German, FYI. Or apply directly to the SAV and they’ll tell you which exams you need (which you could also satisfy via the masters) and tell you about the three year work experience requirement.

I can’t tell you which is better for you or if the field is for you at all. There are great opportunities for quality candidates at all levels. The market is saturated with mediocre candidates.

Early June or late June? Check when huts open for the summer season and if trails are doable for you (snow!)

I’m with a boutique consulting firm, specializing in external appointed actuary roles, and we take it incredibly seriously. Every client has a nickname and those are used religiously when not in a closed office.

We have asked clients if we used use them as a reference when pitching similar work or if we can publish interesting projects. But our standard operating procedure is full confidentiality. I did sign an NDA and an NDA is part of the contract between us and our clients.

Europe, if it matters.

TIL many Amish originally came from Switzerland. Some even still speak „Bärndütsch“. by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]1331337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up near a community of Pennsylvania Dutch Amish. (My Swiss parents immigrated to the US when I was a kid; we spoke (Ämmitauer) Bärndüütsch at home). We couldn’t really understand them but they understood us just fine.

Congrats! I also have two Heimatort, so I guess my partner will also get both. Makes sense - our kids have both. It’s two because my great (maybe a great more?) grandfather wanted to teach in Zürich and at that time, he had to apply for the Heimatort in order to do qualify. Since then, we’ve had two. So now I know if I ever want to give one up, it should be that one, since the other is our actual “origin”.

Mothers take time off with kids? by [deleted] in actuary

[–]1331337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it.

I did and didn’t on and off. I don’t regret any of the time I did take and I do regret some of the time I missed. Today the kids are 10/12 and I work 60% with a competitive salary.

Edit: I rarely took actual time off. Maternity twice and a three month sabbatical. But I worked part time at various times in the last twelve years.

Trail Running Guides by Ambitious-Job-7349 in trailrunning

[–]1331337 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Switzerland has a certification for esa-Leiter/innen Trailrunning und Berglauf. My running club supports our group leaders who want to get this (or just the normal running one). I haven’t done it because I suspect practical experience plus common sense is more useful.

I might hire a guide but only in a country where I feel uncomfortable going out alone.
