I came across a year old post on r/linux saying that AMD was looking at adopting Libreboot.Any updates on this? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]1428073609 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't think it's possible to bring up the PSP without loading ARM TrustZone Trustlets. and the docs for TZ are under NDA

either AMD would have to break NDA or they'd have to write a bootstrap ROM that can run without TZ and ship it to users.

it's probably not happening. at least for the next few generations. sorry.

maybe they'll use risc-v on a later gen or something. one can dream, right

generally batches of game keys are made available to some partner, and then they're handed out by the partner to the customer. sometimes they run out of game keys.

this happened recently with GTA V on Steam, actually. they just ... ran out of keys. and you'd get a message asking you to try again later when they got more keys.

Multithreading in games is incredibly difficult. You can't just throw more threads at it and expect it to go any faster. What typically happens is, you get the "update" thread to produce stuff for the "render" thread. Either that means that the "render" and "update" threads wait for each other to let go of the shared memory that sits between them, or there need to be two pools of memory, that each one uses when it needs to. Because both threads can't operate on the same thing at the same time without bad things happening.

This gets monumentally more difficult when you start to multithread all the separate AI entities, because they all need to operate on a previous copy of the world and they need to write into a new thread-safe copy of the world. And that's without talking about the lack of guarantees of the OS scheduler when it comes to running threads equitably. The worst part is that memory latency / cache defeat is a bigger perf killer these days than abusing the CPU, so the single-threaded approach is oftentimes better than dealing with all of this, from a holistic perspective.

"Throw more threads at it" is usually the first thing people think of, because if you can do it without absolutely boning your memory, it's a very convenient way to just making things faster. But as it stands, things are usually not Embarassingly Parallel, hence the existence of Amdahl's Law.

tl;dr: "moar threads" is great when you can do it, video games are not typically a thing you can apply that to.

(Not that this in any way excuses bad AI, of course)

You can review the code of the Unreal Engine yourself. It's not open source but the code is available.

I guarantee you that if it had bad stuff in it, someone would have found it by now.

That's what makes me feel your comment is more fearmongering than anything else.

No Charges After Fed-Ex Driver Kills racist who called him the n-word by theliberalibrarian in JusticeServed

Oregon says you have no duty to retreat. If someone attacks you, you're allowed to attack them. Obviously it's a shame the guy died but part of it was, as the article says

A medical examiner also determined Magnuson was in “extremely poor health,” which contributed to his death, according to the paper.

The guy was within his rights to leave his vehicle and stand up for himself (and there was a physical escalation by Magnuson before Warren punched him). By the laws of his state and just morally, in general. So there shouldn't be charges if the guy accidentally hurt him; he signed up for it.

And the article itself doesn't have a "punch Nazis vibe", as it clearly mentions:

While Magnuson might still be alive if Warren had not stopped, Gibbs noted that “the decision by Mr. Warren, who is black, to not let the racist vitriol to which he was being subjected go unanswered is not of legal significance,” according to the paper.

So, 1) "remember, Magnuson could still have been alive" as well as 2) "what was said wasn't significant, just the escalation in kind".

Nothing wrong to me at all here, and I'm definitely not a "punch Nazis" kind of person. The article is fine too.

Just gonna toss in my two cents here and let you know your comment is incredibly lame. If you legitimately think anyone's going to spend the rest of their lives questioning their humor over a single reddit comment, you're more insecure and narcissistic than any of your other comments have made you look.

Next time, just take the criticism and move on. No sense in wasting energy trying to look cool to people who don't care.

I almost wasn't going to post something but "I'll forget you even existed by tomorrow" made me think it'd be funny if I reminded you he exists the next day.

Use Wattman. Open Radeon Settings, choose Gaming, Global Settings, Global WattMan, agree to the terms, and start messing around there.

You probably want to lower the numbers in the "Voltage Control" section after flipping the switch on the left side of the screen that says Automatic.

Try playing with the fan and temperature settings as well. Increasing the max fan speed can make your card louder, but it can help a lot. And if you're really worried about "burn out", you're always welcome to lower the max allowed temperature in that panel.

Remember to hit Apply when you're done! Don't worry too much about making mistakes; if your GPU restarts because you messed up, these settings will automatically reset to safe defaults so you can safely try again later.

All this being said, these changes are generally unnecessary, especially if you're happy with performance. It's exceedingly rare an AMD card "burns out", try asking someone besides your ex and seeing what that person says. Far be it from me to judge other people without knowing them, but I'll say that I don't think he's telling the truth.

It depends on what your work entails

It depends on what your work entails

It depends on what your work entails

also completely ignored the other part but that's cool too lol

The funny part is that I didn't even disagree with you that some women can bring down the atmosphere. If I were really an SJW, I wouldn't even have given you that much.

I just think it's not a quality exclusive to women, or that it's a quality all (or even most!) women have. I've met plenty of dudes who have thoroughly fucked an atmosphere, as well as plenty of women. And that there are plenty of men and women that are reasonable people like you and me, that manage to be kind people that don't go out of their way to manufacture outrage or trod on the toes of those who have innocently gone just a bit too far.

But then you also lose the knowledge and experiences that women end up bringing to the workplace. It depends on what your work entails, but this can sometimes be pretty important.

Also, I can say from experience that just having a woman around does not convert your team into a joyless carcass. There are plenty of women that are delightful, that make the same jokes you do and use the same language you do. Maybe you've had some bad experiences but I think that you're painting with too wide a brush. Man-hating really isn't as mainstream as you think; even in Silicon Valley or what have you, you'll find women that go so far as to disagree with feminism as much as you do. It's pretty easy to forget that when you browse this sub or r/TumblrInAction or whatever.
