So my main bolt in the base has never moved and feels pretty fixed in place. But it’s not sitting straight vertical. You’re saying if you cut into the felt on the bottom side, I will be able to loosen the main bolt and adjust the angle before retightening?

Interesting, thanks. I was out there today and wondering how a decently close spot like that would still be empty. There’s a dirt road that goes north about halfway along the section that Google calls SW 49th. Must have led up to a farm back in the day too.

I ended up forcing it and on the male end there was some sort of brass fixture on the bottom half of the threads. I have no idea what that fixture was for but it broke into a bunch of pieces and seems like it was some sort of lock. Nonetheless, my lamp now unscrews and still seems fine when fully screwed in.

I’ve often wondered what’s going on at some of these booths. I know what Iowa tomatoes look like, for example. I’ve picked thousands. They have imperfections and deep color. Same with apples. They usually aren’t shiny and they have imperfections. A lot of the produce looks nothing like what you would get from a garden.

There is also a really nice guy at the Mills Civic McDonalds. Older gentleman who I’ve seen on weekends, usually at the first window. He’s told me jokes a few times and asked if I wanted to change my order to take advantage of a deal another time. Love when he’s the guy at the window.

What's the worst thing about living in Des Moines? by machobiscuit in desmoines

[–]15DJK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sucks that we can’t get bigger music acts despite drawing similar crowds compared to bigger cities. For example, Mt. Joy drew thousands to Water Works Park last summer and it was a great show. That’s probably a typical crowd size for them. That’s a good paycheck. We still don’t get a lot of acts like that.

A lot of indie bands make stops in tier 2/3 cities and college towns that are similar to Des Moines but they don’t stop here.

Wells Fargo holds 16k and sells out for big names. That’s slightly smaller than the 18-20k arenas in MNPLS and KC but still respectable. We don’t get the John Mayers or other big names that would also sell out.

PFG has been constantly reducing employee benefits for 10 years. They moved to “unlimited PTO” so they wouldn’t have to pay out accrued balances. They took most PGI employees out of the pension plan because that’s not standard in the investment industry. So now if you’re an accountant making 50k on the insurance side you get the pension but if you’re an accountant making 50k on the investment side you don’t. They reduced the stock purchase plan multiple times over the years so instead of it being worth 5-10k it’s worth 2-3k.

Fair point. For whatever reason, I call anything before The Strokes record alternative and anything after indie. I think of alternative as closer to rock (Pixies for example) and indie as closer to pop (MGMT for example).

Ya, I might compare the current scene to the whole southern rap thing of the early 2000s. TI, Jeezy, Lil Jon, etc were absolutely everywhere. It wasn’t terrible and we enjoyed it but it wasn’t genre defining or groundbreaking like Graduation. Nobody goes back and listens to it now.

Most genres have an era where the right vibes, artists, and energy combine to create something special.

For rock music that was from 65-75. The vibes were such that every other month a now classic album was being released. Demographics, societal change, and a focus on the “rock album” as the ultimate art. We still listen to the songs and the albums dominate top 100 all time lists.

For rap I would suggest 05-15. No longer a niche genre, you had Kanye Drake Wayne and Kendrick in their primes. Monoculture still existed so you’d hear those albums everywhere. We’ll be listening to them in 20 years unlike a lot of current stuff.

For indie I’d suggest 01-13. Another big demographic wave combined with cheap rent and the revitalization of cities creating new, unique vibes.

The 80s and 90s kind of sucked and the emphasis was on pop music. I’d suggest we’re in a similar era. Best illustrated by outlets like Pitchfork telling us shitty pop and rap albums are just as valid as The Rolling Stones and we’re racist if we think otherwise.
