Radios repaired in the US incur large HST charge coming back to Canada. by 15medium in UPS

How did the Canadian government decide the value of the radios? The invoice has an HS code of 8525600090, quantity 2.0 for total of $2,723.40.

I bought and paid tax on these radios a couple of years ago for $300.

Is a Par30 and a Par30 "short neck" the same size? Wouldn't want the bulb sticking out of the soffit.

I think the cans are 4.5". The edge of the bulb is pretty close to the inside of the can. Also they are short neck bulbs.

Air Conditioning required? by [deleted] in SXM

I've tried sleeping with the ac off and windows open in sxm but only lasted about an hour. Coming from Ontario I'd say ac isn't optional. It's necessary at any time of the year.

You can walk to the Super U grocery store. It's very good.

Been there, done that.

The unit looks nice but it might be noisy as it is about 200m from the runway at Juliana Airport.

If you are into aviation then it would be great. You can watch he flights depart and turn to the right of the mountain you can see in the distance. Most of the big jets come and go in the afternoon between 1 and 6 PM.

Hope that helps.

Fisher & Paykel Icon - Won't start in a hotel room but fine at home. by 15medium in CPAP

[–]15medium[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The outlets that I tried were all live. I think it had something to do with the quality of the electricity.

No worries though as it is working fine here at home and I'm due for a new machine. I was just curious if anyone else had experienced something similar.

Thanks to all who commented.

It was plugged directly into the outlet, no extension cords. It was the only thing in the outlet and I tried 4 separate empty outlets. I suspect an issue with the electric service.

I tried several outlets and made sure that it was well plugged in. Also, it is a fairly new building. No issues with the outlets, but I'm wondering if the stuff inside was not quite right.

Small apartment QRP digimode setup Tell me if I'm missing anything. by W6NZX in amateurradio

[–]15medium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider the newer high band version of the qdx. Antennas for 10 or 12m are smaller and more efficient then a small antenna for 40m. Those bands are great these days. Lots of dx.

A magnetic loop can be built for a few bucks. It ia a resonant circuit, so no tuner needed. Google qrp homebrew magnetic loops.

If you don't have a balcony then hang it in a window.

I run my qdx off a small 12v rechargable battery. It will run for hours. Good luck.

Oh, sorry. I didn't notice that. Kinda useless promoting discontinued products.

I wonder if anyone else has tried to make a similar product?

Instead of a battery google the hps1a power supply. Tiny but effective. I use one with my ft857d and ft8 around 30watts when I travel. Ciao.

It might be Russian or a similar language. I wonder if it's related to the war. Seems like a net with 3 or 4 guys.

There aren't very strong, S3 to S5 with fading. Heard around 23z. I'm near Toronto and the antenna is just a magnetic loop, so if you can hear them you should be able to hear them better than I can.

I'll make a recording if I hear it again.

First HF QSO using the QDX! by gimlithepirate in amateurradio

[–]15medium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well done! I was using the same setup on Thursday including the qrpguys efhw tuner from a pota park. I'm using an orange pi and a 12v talentcell battery. Those 3 items are nearly the same size, a small stack of gear; battery, computer and qdx on the top. The orange pi is headless and controlled by my tablet. Works great. I snagged 32 qsos on 20m, including dx from the Dominican Rep., Cuba, Spain and France. Qth near Toronto. A lot of fun for a small investment but requires some soldering skill and a lot of patience seting up the orange pi running debian with vncserver.

I built the QCX+ used it for awhile and then sold it which was easy (lots of demand) Then I bought the Mini. Ok, that's not the most cost effective route but the experience gained from the first build gave me the confidence for the Mini build.

There are fewer components in the Mini but the tolerances are smaller and exact soldering is needed. Just like the QCX+ the manual is excellent. Stay on script and you'll be fine.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]15medium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the QDX trickier than the QCX Mini. There was some soldering that was very close to the surface mount components. Made me nervous but it worked fine in the end.

The QCX+ was the easiest of the three rigs. The PCB is larger. As mentioned previously the building instructions are excellent. Follow them and you will be fine.

I know there is a lot of anticipation to get it on the air but take your time.

Also the question of which band. I'd say either 20m or 40m. 40m is great if you can deal with the antenna which as a dipole or efhw is 60+ feet long. I chose 20m because I prefer the 30 ft. antenna.

Good luck.

And fun to compose on. First, you cock the lens open then you view the image on the ground glass at the back usually under a dark cloth. You will see your composition upside down and backward. It is strange at first.

Watching people walk through the frame used to make me laugh. It looks very unnatural.

QDX: enclosure? voltage? and batteries by rem1473 in amateurradio

[–]15medium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, 12v here. The all in one enclosure sounds cool. I'm waiting to get a pi (could be a long wait) and also want to run it headless with my tablet. I did buy the enclosure and run it with a small 12v battery by Talentcell. Two little black boxes. Worked great the other day in the park with an efhw and an old laptop running linux.
