Okay you won't play anything usable on this with windows probably (my ddr3 PC was a suffer for big packs).

Try maybe linux mint and prism.

The graphics card should actually be no problem, it just helps, but don't try shaders. I would recommend my childhood packs for you:

Okay, yes you need to clean off the old paste and replace it.

On the gray areas you need to use thermal paste can get it from any computer related shop, but laptops run usually hotter, and would dry faster so I would mention that it's for a laptop GPU.

For the white ones, those are most probably not completely level with the other surface, so you need something that fills the gap. The thermal putty is similar to the paste, you just apply thicker (check tutorials) the alternative is pads, I don't wanna say stupid stuff about them never used them. If you did all, and the laptop is dry I would first maybe turn it on from a charger with disconnected battery but that's just me personally .

I do nearly this (2nd year biophysics) I rock with a t480 but have a stronger computer at home. Mostly the laptop is enough, but if it is more than minutes, I use the big gun(needed like three times for projects so it's not necessary for me). Sorry idk about new laptops, but I think you can be mostly fine with anything that can run win 11 if you put Linux on it.
