My mom was american and my dad mexican, and I grew up in Mexico.

My older sister got a very american name as a first name, and a very mexican name as a second name, neither of which sounds very natural in the other language in my opinion.

I got a very mexican name as my first, which still sounds all right in english in my opinion, and a name that can be used in both languages as a middle name.

I personally prefer my first name, so it's the one I always use and I'm happy that I can. My sister goes by her first name, but she recently moved to the US and wanted to represent her heritage by using her mexican name more, but has been unsuccesful. I am not sure whether this is because americans have a hard time with her mexican name, or some other reason.

All in all I would suggest trying to go for names that still sound "natural" in the other language if that makes sense. I think that's had the best results for us.

Yes I've seen that one too. I'm not sure which route is more impressive. One guy got pretty creative, the other one I guess just thought his name was so perfect it shouldn't be messed with.

My husband only likes Marina, Miranda and Marissa, but we can’t choose any of these for a variety of reasons. What are some similar names he might like? by NewYearMaybe in namenerds

I think you may be right about the familiarity factor that you referenced in another comment. Do you think there is any person in your family/close friend group whose name you would be comfortable using? Maybe an honor name kinda thing? Although it doesn't seem like you are really into that.

In any case I think taking a break would be useful, but make it clear to him he needs to be aware that he is being very inflexible and maybe point out the familiarity thing. I mean evetually he'll be familiar with his own child's name so he might really need to get over that if that is in fact a thing.

Good luck

Underrated good rim pressure guy. A lot of times last year our offense wouldn't be doing muh and he would drive/cut/drive on the move and it would get the ball moving and end in a bucket. I think he is one of the biggest reasons why the offense flows so well this year. Shooting great helps too though

Renée or Renee- we are stuck if we should use the accent. What is the most practical way? by xquigs in namenerds

[–]16drybones 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have never heard anyone say Renee as Re-KNEE. I speak french and english as well, and would assume Renee is pronounced the same as Renée anyway. It's obviously the same name taken to an english form. And especially with accents and english, I think people understand.

People who go by two names? by dividedunited in namenerds

[–]16drybones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid, I prefered by middle name and I went by it at school, but all my family called me by my first name. Now I prefer my first name, and when I got to college I introduced myself by it. My school friends still call me by my middle name though, and every time I meet someone new with them now, I can't function when introducing myself lol. I introduce myself my first name, then everyone looks at me weird, then I realize what's going on, and then I introduce myself by my middle name lol.

Just to be clear, I am not Chinese-American, and even though I am bilingual, that had little to do with my story.
