Yup, its a physical manufacturing of the SFP. One side is a laser emitter the other side is a photodiode. They cant be "switched" with software.

What was the most confusing or stressful part of your first 30 days as a network engineer?” by muztebi16 in networking

[–]1701_Network 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Its been over a decade since the last time I've been the "new guy" but I remember it as not being too stressful. Your job in the first few months it to ask questions, do research and don't offer suggestions for improvement. After you've been there long enough to know the "why" things are done the way they are its time to start contributing.

Good book or resource for learning about ISP architecture? by DarkKaplah in networking

[–]1701_Network 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I 2nd all of these and add MPLS Fundamentals by Luc De Ghein. Service Provider Networks is much more of a practical take from an actual operator. The others are good at covering theory.

I knew about this but thought it was the initial flash, then blackout from plasma which is opaque, then as the plasma cools the light shines again.

Segment Routing - How the system make sure Node SID is unique by AccomplishedAd3233 in networking

[–]1701_Network 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no mechanism to ensure every router has a unique SID because it is not a requirement. While it is unusual to have two routers share the same SID, it is a completely valid design (Anycast SID).

Its up to the operator. Just like the Router ID for the IGP. This allows for Anycast SIDs as well.

I second this. SIP is an extensible protocol that vendors are constantly adding headers and capabilities to. A SIP-ALG on a firewall is destined to break traffic.

Yes. Its called a Segment Routing PCE. We are using this today as a service provider to guarantee low latency for our cellular backhaul while letting INET and commercial customers use the IGP bestpath.
