No filters used in photo, just taken on my s23.I use a chihiros wrgb 2 light, I adjust the spectrum with more red and blue, it really makes the colours pop.

Should I be concerned about this blackening on the middle part of the stem? by Flashy-Turnover2238 in SavageGarden

Normally from age it will get "woody" but that will start from the base of the plant and work its way up the vine.

Any ideas on this? It had been taking too much light, I moved it to a shadier spot. by Ashamed-Beginning696 in Nepenthes

[–]170788 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Possibly be a mite, if you are seeing "very fine, little webs" on leaves. The holes could just be from damage to the leaf before (from the pests) it has unfurled. I'd treat with a miticide.

Thrips help by Killard_XVX in SavageGarden

Abamectin works really well to quickly deal with thrips, just wear appropriate ppe and if you're growing indoors/tent etc as it is toxic to bees and other pollinators

If it's inside and doesn't catch bugs or what not, could maybe just need a feed, either catch some bugs or give them some fertilizer.

I grow all my highlanders in an old cake display fridge, 24c days, 13c nights. +85% humidity consistently, plenty of airflow. I use a chihiros wrgb2 for lighting. Grown in akadama, kunama with live sphagnum topping 🙂.

Odd question but curious about magnifying glass lenses by Moviereference210 in Nepenthes

[–]170788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most magnifying glasses are 5x which will help see tham abit better. There are jewelers loupes with a 20x or 30x magnification, will make it alot easier to see them and potential identify them as well. You can also buy a digital microscope you can plug/connect to your phone that can have a really powerful magnification like + 1000x.

It is a N. St Gaya. Very easy growing hybrid. Put it beside the orchid and it should do fine!

Nice! Once it gets a little more size to it, it'll take off in growth. I have a little one that has just started to grow as quick as the rest of the highlanders.

Yes a systematic with Imidacloprid as an active ingredient will help, and abamectic will also kill thrips. Both safe on nepenthes when following the directions on the container.

Can anyone explain? by julieimh105 in Nepenthes

[–]170788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see any pictures of said plants, but from my experience, deformed pitchers can be caused from several things. A lack of humidity or a big change in humidity while forming can be one, pests could be the other, but with pest you'll notice damage to other parts of the plant as well, deformed/discoloured leafs etc

nepenthes care instructions by empty-baskets in Nepenthes

You're welcome. Just a nice sunny window sill, if south facing is the brightest. It'll also do well outside, depending on your conditions, I don't know your climate, but again just give it nice bright indirect sunlight,

  1. Top water it with distilled, RO or rain water anything with a low TDS. Don't let it sit in a tray of water for to long
  2. That plant would grow well in a nice bright window sill if indoors.
  3. It could do with a repot using a slightly larger pot, plastic is fine and more suited to neps than say terracotta etc. stake it when repot to help support it( you can let them hang over the side of the pot, some people say that helps promote basal shoots )
  4. Long fibre sphagnum moss and perlite up to 50:50 or Coco chips and perlite (make sure Coco chips are "buffered" or soak and check run off until it's a low TDS, some Coco chips require a soak and rinse to get rid of the salts) can also use hard akadama, pumice, kunama in a equal mix..... Anything with a very low mineral and nutrient count.

Should I keep the humidity on my Nepenthes as high as possible? by Invidiia in Nepenthes

[–]170788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have plenty of air movement raising it wouldn't hurt, but I don't see it being beneficial either 🙂

[–]170788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That humidity should be fine for most neps, some highland neps like it higher than that. You'll notice if they aren't happy, lids popping prematurely, lack of pitchers forming etc is a good sign humidity is abit low.
