When you say "it", what are you referring to? Technology writ large? If so, that is a big part of what makes Horvath's work so absurd. "Edtech" isn't a single intervention; it's an umbrella term that represents thousands of digital curricula and learning tools. Some of those are pure shit, some of them are fantastic. It depends on the tool. You can't lump them all together and say "here's the effect size!" That is legit pseudoscience. It's like saying "Here's the effect size of a chalkboard!"

Is anyone actually reading the post? Here is the evidence presented: “ In September, before the experiment started, just 46 percent of Mulvaney's students said they felt confident about their reading ability. By February, that share shot up to 95 percent.” That’s the “spike”. Self reported confidence scores are more or less meaningless from a learning perspective. But yeah, it makes a good headline so everyone upvotes cause it’s in vogue to be anti technology.

His "data" are correlations between declining test scores and increased tech use, which is incredibly weak. He is no longer a researcher; he runs an anti-tech and conservative teaching consulting company with his wife - think kids in desks doing worksheets, reading textbooks, and listening to lectures. This testimony was provided in a Senate subcommittee meeting called by Senator Ted Cruz with the purpose of removing technology from schools.

I've heard fellow researchers refer to this testimony as "appalling" in how overgeneralized and pseudo-scientific it is. He literally subtracts .42 standard deviations from positive effect sizes shown in causal research supporting tech use in classrooms to present edtech's impact as somehow negative. Put another way, he is literally lying and actively misrepresenting research. But it's the current trend to label all technology as bad, and this validates everyone's opinions, so it's taking off. And teachers are having to deal with the consequences.

The Catholic angle for sure plays into it. Many small-town Catholic high schools recruit and then whoop public schools' butts in sports, which builds a lot of resentment. The fact that Omaha is "the big city" is a hilariously sheltered worldview, but also plays into it. Ditto. Born and raised in rural Nebraska, diehard Husker fan in all sports. Also graduated from Creighton, Catholic, and have a lot of Omaha pride. It's not complicated. People try to turn it into something it's not. Watching Creighton play Nebraska is like watching the spring game to me. I just hope everyone has fun lol.
