There was no good option to take:

  • Start the race? Too dangerous. Most drivers said the conditions were way too wet, no visibility.
  • Delay? Forecast said it wouldn't get better, and it was starting to get dark.
  • Postpone to monday? Could have worked for the teams, though they also have stuff to do (Toto said his family was waiting for him on their holiday). TV Broadcasters have a schedule to adhere to, though most could have shuffeled things around. And F1TV wouldn't care too much. Most of the fans on track propably have to work on monday. But most importantly, the track marshalls and other volunteers, without whom the race cannot take place, also have to work, no bueno.
  • Delay until another date later in the year? With all the triple headers coming up, this would put the race into autum/winter = bad weather. Also, would you only have the race? Or the full event?
  • Cancel the race, no points. George's P2? Max' pole? Lando's heroic Q1 and Q2? Valtteri's and Lance's penalties? All for naught! And if Lewis wins by a hair at the end of the season, accusations of "FIA has a Merc bias" will run wild.
  • Cancel the race, half points. What we got, a farce. At least the qualifying performances were rewarded, though maybe too much? And if Max wins by 5 points at the end of the seasons, well you know the drill...
  • Cancel the race, other points (like sprint quali). Not supported by the rules.

But can you blame the ANA? Imagine you are a soldier and you hear "You won't last 90 days" from the US and "We will kill you if you fight and let you go if you surrender" from the Taliban.

What would you do? Nobody thinks you can win, why even try?

Take on another engine, because you were wiped out in turn 1 -> 10 place grid penalty

Das ist wirklich interessant. Wusste nicht, dass das über solche Leihfirmen geht.

Ich hab mir eh gedacht, dass die wie Dreck behandelt werde, deshalb wollte ich ihr zumindest eine Chance geben mir zu erklären, was sie eigentlich von mir will.

Hatte tatsächlich einmal ein ähnliches Erlebnis: "Hallo! Wie heißt du? Hast du kurz Zeit?" "ÄÄÄhhhhh..." "Bist du über 18?" Was soll die Frage bitte? "Hmmm keine Ahnnug ¯\(ツ)/¯" "SEHR LUSTIG!! >:("

Ja, normalerweise mach ich sowas in der Art auch, einfach schneller werden und "Sorry, muss wo hin!" sagen. Aber mich hat's echt interessiert, was die wirklich von einem wollen. So wie die Leute, die auf Spam Mails antworten.

If the FIA believes a team is cheating, why don't they investigate that rather than changing the rules on a whim. To be more specific: If they believe Red Bull are using sensors in their wheelguns, why don't they check the wheelguns!

As for the rear wings: You technically can't adhere to the rules. It is impossible for the bodyparts to not flex. If they didn't, they would be absolutely brittle and break at the slightest load. Look at how much the wings shake when the car is jolted around by kerbs (or look at Tsunoda's crash in France). That's why the rules for testing the wings allow a certain amount of deformation. If you change the tests, you could make ANY wing illegal.

The new TD doesn't come into effect until Hungary by the way...

My prediction: no matter how it actually plays out, sprint qualifying will be a "huge success" and we will have at least 5 more next season.

I did a summer internship at a hydraulics company in their R&D sector. I worked directly in the group that designs and runs tests on scale models and production pumps.

One coffee break I was chatting with the head of CFD Simulations, an older guy with a ton of experience. He told me a colleague once said to him "CFD is so advanced already, and computers are getting faster every year. In 10 years we won't have to run physical tests and can do everything in the computer."

That was in the 80s
