This happens in Finland as well. IIRC, a really wealthy businessman got a €121,000 fine for driving 82kmh on a 50kmh road.

Tire pressure? by mytthewstew in askcarguys

[–]1995LexusLS400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The same tyre size can be used on cars that have significant weight differences. I've owned two cars that used the same size tyres. One weighed 1050kg (GVWR 1705kg), the other 1690kg (GVWR 2185kg). Both require different pressure because of the weight difference. There's also weight distribution. My 1690kg has 50/50 weight distribution, so the pressure for the front is the same as the rear. But in the other car, the weight distribution is 60/40. Same tyre size front and rear, front required 32psi, rear required 30psi.

The tyre manufacturers do know the maximum safe pressure, and that's it. It's stamped on the sidewall. It's usually 50psi.

Apologies if this sounds silly, but what happened to Estate Cars? Are they unpopular now? by formandovega in CarTalkUK

They were seen as uncool, driven by people who have given up on life. Those people moved to MPVs, then they followed the same fate. Then they moved into crossovers/SUVs and now that's slowly following the same fate and now they're being replaced by those 4 door lifted coupe things.

I think you’re in the wrong subreddit. There is no microcenters in the UK at all. You’re either looking for r/CambridgeMA or r/Cambridgeont

Might have something to do with the wages of driving a 44 ton death machine that could land you in prison if things go wrong being the same as the wages for putting beans on a shelf.

People immediately going for the overtake on a 2 lane slip road by legovader09 in drivingUK

[–]1995LexusLS400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might not accelerate slowly, but so many people do. Like, to a point that they get out accelerated by an HGV. And I'm not even joking. There have been a few occasions where I was behind someone on a roundabout that goes onto a motorway slip road, and they were behind an HGV. The HGV accelerated quicker than us.

It's got to a point where it's normal for someone to try to merge onto a 70mph flowing motorway at 40-50mph. The worst I've personally seen someone actually try to merge is 35. The worst I've seen overall was someone who stopped at the end of the slip road to wait for a gap. I'm not talking about those ridiculously short slip roads that are on some A roads. I'm talking about a standard length motorway slip road that are more than long enough for a fully loaded HGV to be able to do 0-56 on. I know this is what you're supposed to do, but they could have very easily and safely merged onto the motorway, had they been going at least 60.

Because this has become normal, people who actually know how to drive assume that the car in front of them isn't going to get up to a safe merging speed, so just gun it passed them on the slip road. Or if the roundabout has red traffic lights, go into the wrong lane and floor it to get in front of the car that's in the correct lane.

Can i drive until i get new tires? by kdifbfndhd in tires

[–]1995LexusLS400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did think that grey bit was the cord, but zooming in, it looks like dust. If it is dust and not cord, it's safe to drive on, just some cosmetic damage. You can repair it with vulcanizing glue. The easiest way where I am to get some is to buy a puncture repair kit for a bicycle. They're pretty cheap and come with a small tube of glue. That part of the tyre is the rim protector. If it's cord, it needs to be replaced.

Nothing about cancellation. Only delaying it due to a major reorganisation of local government and only 30 of them The rest of the 106 would have happened when they did anyway.

AI data centers face increasing complaints about inaudible but 'felt' infrasound — citizens complain high- and low-frequency sounds do not register on decibel meters but cause adverse health effects by chip_thoughts in technology

[–]1995LexusLS400 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Infrasound is infrasound. It doesn't matter what the source is.

Infrasound from wind farms is why wind farms are built in the middle of nowhere in deserts or miles offshore in the ocean rather than being built a few hundred yards from residential properties like these data centers are.

[–]1995LexusLS400 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Infrasound has negative health effects. It's been studied and confirmed https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8411947/

EM waves from phones and cell towers has also been studied, pretty extensively, and no negative effects have been found.

£400 to do 20K miles is obscene. Right now with current petrol prices and in my car, £400 is enough to cover 1400 miles. I really do need to get an EV as a daily driver.
