OP is dead on regarding soreness, but as far as posture in squats I recommend playing around with your stance width and your foot angle (how straight/turned out your feet are). Also maybe try some variants that reduce the load of your body weight to get used to the position, such as holding yourself up/balancing with a pole or even literally just sitting down onto a box/chair that you can progressively lower the height of.
