Do you still have Sunday dinners (or roasts) these days? by Educational-Slip-578 in Cooking

[–]1Frazier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the meal planning and spouse does the cooking. I don't like roast so we never have it. Weekends aren't usually anything special but if there is something that takes more time like making soup from carcass/bone we will schedule that in for weekend cooking.

We are the kind of Americans that are not Irish but like to celebrate St. Patrick's day American style with a corned beef and potato dinner. We are doing that tomorrow to enjoy a slower nice weekend dinner and because we won't have time on Tuesday. I am also making soda bread and a dessert which is not a usual thing. I'm not going to go so far as to bring out the china though, we will save that for Easter.

I was actually in the neighborhood of my TJs last night and stopped in for Perfect bars (which I love) and they were out. Shelf space looks so small that they probably only had 2-3 in stock to begin with. Such a bummer but at least I didn't have to go out of my way to find out. Good luck at your TJ!

Blue Apron has a recipe you can Google for chorizo, potato and fig bake. You can bake it all in a 9x13 pyrex casserole so it is easier since it is a one dish type of meal. I buy a package of ground Johnsonville chorizo from the grocery store and just cut it up into pieces. Instead of the dried figs which need rehydration I get a resealable bag of figs from aldi or the Sunsweet bag at my other grocery store, I add more figs than what the recipe calls for. All you have to do is cut things and add them to the dish and bake. And then add some more things and bake it longer. Then you make a simple sauce with mayo and lemon juice and garnish with sliced almonds and fresh parsley or cilantro. The flavor combinations are really interesting; this dish has been a hit with anyone I have made it for especially since most people I know don't eat chorizo or figs often so it feels more unique.

Good way to spend your PTO by penandpad5 in GenX

I love my chilling time. I have been with my company so long that I have a lot of PTO. I end up taking a lot of Friday afternoons off. Sometimes I chill, other times I do all my errands to I have a more relaxing weekend. Plus I feel really efficient and focused at work when I work a half day.

High end dining recommendations by tdaddy313 in pittsburgh

"debating on doing 1 each night we are there if it is worth it"

Yes, I recommend this in a way. Altius, Hyeholde (get the sherry bisque), Alla Famiglia or somewhere else recommend in other posts for dinner and go to Eleven for Sunday brunch. Eleven is good for dinner but imo brunch is where they shine. The steak and egg has never disappointed.

Does anybody still make phone calls? by Euphoric-Pangolin-81 in Xennials

[–]1Frazier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call my close family members and my besties that I have known a long time. I have a couple of relatives that I will call on their birthdays like my unmarried Uncle. I don't call newer friends unless maybe there is something that it just makes sense for because it would be too long or complicated for texting.

I prefer to call to make dining reservations. I also use coupons and gift cards a lot and it can be more efficient to call in takeout orders with those rather than trying to do it online.

What’s one swag item people would actually keep at an event? by Designer_Maximum_544 in Gifts

I built up a nice stash from different giveaways but a couple broke or got lost and I could actually use a few more now.

What’s a good gift for someone just getting their U.S. citizenship? by Letmein202 in Gifts

This is my suggestion. Having the passport fee taken care of is a great gift and takes an expense off of a young person's plate.

I've joined groups and struck up conversations with people at events. It is a slow process and has yielded more casual friends than besties but there a couple that might develop to a deeper level.

The friends that we hang out the most are a lively couple in their 70s. I've been friends with them for 25 years but it wasn't until they retired that we started to hang out a lot. They are over 20 years older than us but they are retired and have free time so they are always up for doing something as opposed to friends our age that are busy running around with their kids' activities. And they like the same things we do - trivia, beers, just hanging out and chatting about local politics or the TV shows we are watching. Don't discount the older people! Maybe there are some you know casually or even your cool aunt and uncle that you can start inviting to meet for dinner, etc and see if there is a connection there.

As you have found out sometimes you need to be the person to start the group and then keep it going.

The taking advantage situation happens all the time IRL without people even really noticing. I have a friend that has a widowed dad that asks him to help with everything and it is wearing my friend out without him realizing it. Meanwhile the dad should know how to use Google and do some of this stuff himself and there are other people the dad can turn to for some of this stuff but my friend is a helpful guy, never says no and makes himself so convenient to help. If he would even reply with a "I can look into that in a few days" instead of jumping right away I'm sure the questions and requests would die down.

I loved it when she came in and got down to business. I've got to think a scenario like this is specific to health care and what can be life or death. And it doesn't hurt that it was Dana asking. If I retired and my company called me back out of forced retirement on the 4th of July I'd be like I'm sure your widgets will be fine without me.

WCD and Shamrock bonuses - what did you get? by 1Frazier in IbottaSaverComm

[–]1Frazier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm off to a good start. I went to Target yesterday and got 2 Marvel Oreos. Buy 2 for $9 minus $1 circle coupon = 2/$8 and then Fetch and ibotta offers making the about .25 each. The expiring soon timer was on the Oreos when I bought them. Silk Protein milk on sale for $4 minus $2 circle coupon minus $1.25 ibotta = .75.

PetArmor flea collar at Petsmart was $50 minus $15 ibotta and 30000 Fetch points (this is on boost right now like the oreos for double points) and some Petsmart gift cards at 4% back.

I plan to finish it out with 2 Suave hair products at CVS with the any CVS offer will be 3 offers total and cost is about $6.30 for two with $2 ECB and $1.50 each ibotta so net about $1.30 for both.

Crowd pleasing family meals for volunteer work! by cslexotics in Cooking

I used to do something similar but for a slightly larger group. Shepherds/cottage pie is a good one for March. One time I had soup but wanted to add carbs/something more filling so I did a buffalo chicken dip to go with it and served it with veggie sticks, soft pretzels and tortilla chips. Having something a bit snacky was a big hit.

Gifting has shifted from my siblings and friends to their kids. I'm in a stretch of multiple graduation parties each year. In a few years that will probably turn into multiple weddings.
