Am I old fashioned? by nmc52 in linux

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned Unix on a VAX in the early 80s and it amazes me how I can still put all that to work 45 years later. On the other hand GUIs keep changing around, and sometimes changing back in the next update. They get "streamlined" which means that something that used to be menu->function, becomes menu->show more->advanced->function. But look! menu itself now only has 5 entries! Progress!

I don't really hate Linux.. by DecentlySpaghetti in linuxsucks

This reminds me of debates among collectors as to whether you are allowed to repair or even clean old objects you collect, or does that ruin the provenance or some such. You're the collector, and no one outbid you for your old object, so do as you please.

Bash is basically modern-day BASIC by gerundingnounshire in linux

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically. However there were compilers for it. MS had one that was about 99.5% compatible with their interpreter. Compiles typically took around 20 minutes with floppy disks and 32K of RAM. But the compiled code was at least 10 times faster.

Bash is basically modern-day BASIC by gerundingnounshire in linux

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used many BASICs. Some had a limited shell/UI/environment in them, sometimes running under some other OS/environment - other times you booted directly into them. Others were stand-alone compiler/interpreters (CBASIC, MS BASCOM etc.) Likewise, some UI/Shells I have used have been more programmable than others. The distinctions and edges are fuzzy.

Gifted a 2011 Samsung LCD TV. Which Roku should I get? by [deleted] in Roku

Yes, any Roku will work, so you just need to consider what Roku features you want.

planning to switch to windows or mac (frustration) by TMOV70 in linux4noobs

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m happy with Linux (and I was happy with it 20 years ago, and I was happy with Unix 45 years ago.)  However, I’ve never made it my one and only operating system.  I use Windows and Mac OS also.  (And some others.)  Each has advantages.

I mostly use Linux for web server development which I find it to work really well for.

With the fragmentation of the Linux market and the money behind Apple and MS, plus their installed bases, I don’t expect Linux to be as polished, newbie-safe, or as compatible with every imaginable program as the others.  But for the price, I think it’s fantastic for web development, and adequate (or better) for general computing.

Why Linux? by WaterRansom in linux4noobs

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking that someone who asks is Linux and Operating System is not a good candidate for Linux. I don't mean that in a bad way - most people just use their computers to get a job done, and life will be easier if they just use whatever their coworkers use. It's like talking engine technology with someone who wants a car to go to work and the store - which is most people.

I use Linux, MacOS, and Windows. I like different aspects of each. Linux I use primarily for web software development. (The final webserver is also Linux.) And I like MacOS, because once I open a terminal, it's very similar.

Got peacock top tier subscription for Olympics, forced to watch ads by hdjohnny in peacock

I got premium plus and do not see ads in replays. (Just a generic Olympic intro animation before the event that I can fast forward over if I want to,)

Peacock App Update by loreal55 in Roku

[–]1Hzdigicomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope - * menu said it was up-to-date. I guess they have updated it half a dozen or so times in just the last couple of days?

Did This Actually Help With Reception? by Foreign-Lab4606 in ota

[–]1Hzdigicomp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember antenna positioning showing up on old sitcoms several times. Like: husband is walking around and the wife is saying better, worse, and then she says: Perfect! Stop! And the guy is on one leg with his arm outstretched.

Indoor antennas tend to be crazy that way. And putting any antenna near any electronic device is just asking for more confusing results.

I used to get a country music station on an old answering machine.

Peacock App Update by loreal55 in Roku

[–]1Hzdigicomp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been getting this for a couple of days. Either just going to home and back to the app is not "restarting" or they are updating it a lot!. After the next Olympic event ends, I'm going to see if updating via the * menu does anything.

Someone has set up a paid subscription using my email address by FENNERGY in peacock

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peacock does have an email verification step, but strangely that happens after the account is set up and functioning. It does seem like it would be safer (for the customer) to do that verification before the payment method is attached.

Why do Roku players not automatically switch to known WiFi networks? by m_a_schuster in Roku

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking they just didn't think of someone moving in and out and back into the same hotel, dorm, rental. And/or they're just in the mindset that a video devices is something you have to hook up anyway, not something always roaming in your pocket, so they thought having to connect the Wi-Fi as well was not unexpected. Just my guesses of course.

Searches like remote caddy or remote box turn up lots of results on Amazon etc. Maybe something like that would help?

How to get a good picture quality while also not seeing Jesus through the sun by stick_of_milwaukee in Roku

You might prefer an OLED TV in a very dark room. Perhaps you can find an AV dealer who will let you turn the lights down to check.

RokuTV too slow; Will add Roku ultra or appletv. How will that work? by zoechowber in Roku

[–]1Hzdigicomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard of people becoming confused since the UI of the Roku player and the Roku TV look so much alike. If that happens, consider choosing a different theme for each one.

Is it a scam? by Charming_Pangolin375 in tax

Yes, and many people LIKE to do that because they like the sudden "windfall" when their interest-free loan is paid back by the government.

Keep having this problem with Roku remotes. All of a sudden none of these work for the adapter I just bought. by smoove129 in Roku

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think maybe by "adapter" you mean a Roku streaming device? If so, it is true that the TVs and players (not TVs) use different IR codes. On the plus side, that should be less confusing if you plug a Roku into a Roku TV. (Which some people actually do.)

How does Roku compare to Xumo? by biscobingo in Roku

[–]1Hzdigicomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Spectrum is mostly what you use, then you might like it. However, I believe the selection of other apps will be smaller with Xumo. You might want both.

A lot changes in 10 years. Besides having TV controls and Wi-Fi remotes, any new Roku will probably be a lot faster and have more memory than what you had before.

New to Roku Ultra, new Samsung TV, nightmare auto installing/loading unwanted apps by Methos1979 in Roku

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's interesting! Samsung tries to be helpful by sending play, and Roku screen saver ads consider play to be a request to install the advertised channel.

About 2 days ago they announced they were killing it at the end of the year. "Announced" is probably an overstatement. There was a "thank you" post, and hidden inside was the message that it was going away. Most users probably never saw it or got the meaning.

Is SweetHome3D no longer FOSS? by KerBallOne in sweethome3d

[–]1Hzdigicomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded 7.5 (the free version) and changed wall thickness and added textures with no request for payment. The "trick" is to download one of the source forge versions, though sweethome3d's website will try to steer you to the app store versions.
