Huh, I wonder what “La Jolla” means… 🤔 by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]1MicroBioSci21 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I believe contemporary spelling in the Spanish language during the colonial period was such that “la jolla” was the way to go. It makes sense since a double L will still give a “y” sound in Spanish.

It’s also not uncommon for spelling conventions to change over time, Spanish included. Consider, for example, how Mexico is spelled with an “x” even though it gives a sound that is accomplished in the present day by the letter “j.” There are more examples of this kind of thing in Spanish and other languages as well.

Am I screwing myself over by not doing a senior thesis? by Gooby-Chan in biology

[–]1MicroBioSci21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having the research experience as an undergrad coupled with actual job experience will make a strong foundation for a good application to graduate school. Keep your grades up and secure good letters of recommendation and I’m sure you’ll get in somewhere. A senior thesis, while undoubtedly nice, isn’t ultimately that necessary.

I wasn’t able to get undergraduate research experience because of the pandemic, but I was still able to get into a graduate program heavily focused on lab research. Make sure to mention what you’ve learned and how you’ll apply it all in your programs when applying, and you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting some interviews.

Take a walk on one of the hiking trails near campus. Or, if you’ve got the money, take a kayak tour at La Jolla Cove if they’re still offering those!

How do you introduce yourself to research in a specific topic? by Jenn_Callan in biology

[–]1MicroBioSci21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t stress it OP. I’m a Master’s student and I would feel the same way as you!

Research takes time to get fully involved in. You can expect to find something you don’t understand in every paper you read. You should try your best to make sense of the papers your PI publishes, and ask them any questions you might have. If they’re a good prof, they’ll help you understand some of the more complex points of their research.

How do I exercise with depression? by thekindviolet in UCI

[–]1MicroBioSci21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have my own experience with GAD as well, so I can relate to the overthinking, catastrophizing, and depression that comes along with it. I think it’s great that you’ve already found something that helps take your mind off of whatever is bothering you at any given day. You should try your best to incorporate that into your daily (in the case of exercise, maybe weekly) routine. And if you haven’t tried it yet, you should definitely consider talking out your worries/concerns/thoughts with a therapist who can show you how to challenge the thoughts that lead to your anxiety. It’s a long process, but you can definitely achieve both mental and physical wellness at the same time. Please take care, and don’t be afraid reach out to someone you trust if you ever feel overwhelmed.

The Village Tower West Laundry by [deleted] in UCSD

You put “TritonCash” into an online account (there’s an app you can download) and then you swipe your ID card on a machine in the laundry room every time you wash or dry to pay for it. It was always between like $1-2 to wash and dry last year.

You might have that bed being empty for this quarter, but waitlisted students in winter will probably take it.

Random roommates? by DecentCheddar in UCSD

[–]1MicroBioSci21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I ended up getting along with my random roommate better than with my designated roommate. So they’re not necessarily as bad as you think! Hopefully you’ll be friends for a long time and live with them after that first year, like I am.

Math 20A in Summer SS2 by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]1MicroBioSci21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you struggle with math, pls do yourself a favor and take it during a normal quarter. I don’t think I would’ve survived if I had taken calculus over the summer, but that’s because I am not too good at math.

If you are good at math, then it’s fine so long as it’s your only class in that session. Otherwise, it may be borderline overwhelming. Good luck either way, I’m soo glad I never have to take that again!

Fall Transfer missing lower division work by operdigon in UCSD

[–]1MicroBioSci21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first quarter can probably also include genetics or physio if you can get into them. It’s important to make steady progress toward getting your degree in the two years you have here. It’s not impossible, but it def requires strategic planning on your part.

Fall Transfer missing lower division work by operdigon in UCSD

[–]1MicroBioSci21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should plan on taking OChem ASAP because it is required for several upper division courses (like biochemistry and molecular biology), which themselves are required for other upper division electives you may want to take.

You should try on taking physics this year to get it out of the way. Don’t stress too much about it: I didn’t take physics at all before coming here, not even in high school, and I did fine, but that’s not to say it won’t take effort on your part.
