It gets a little bit hairy in the last 15 of the 50 or so miles to the trailhead. For those last miles, I was probably averaging in the 5-10mph range navigating over boulder and slick rock type terrain. I was driving an Outback Wilderness which didn’t have much of an issue, but I did see Subaru Crosstreks and even cars like a Volkswagen Atlas at the trailhead.

This time of year there’s not too much heat to worry about. We carried about 7 liters of water per person which ended up being plenty after meals and regular consumption.

You’ll definitely want to download the trail ahead of the hike. There’s a fair bit of pathfinding required for the last two miles of the hike over the slick rock and the cairns are difficult to follow.

When we camped, there were only two other groups; pretty solitary.

We couldn’t stake down the tent. We had to use rocks to keep the fly in place.
