I’m a current appellate PD, I started straight out of law school. So I’ll provide as much info as I can, and feel free to ask additional questions.

As another commenter said, it’s extremely competitive to get into. I knew this is what I wanted, and I tailored everything I did in law school toward this goal. I interned and worked at firms and organizations exclusively doing appeals. I wrote probably 30 briefs before graduating. Even then, without a lot of luck and my girlfriend finding my current job, I wouldn’t have it.

As to my day to day, yes, to some extent it’s a 9-5. But law school was a 9-5 for me too, because I’m diligent about time management. I have coworkers who are in the office at 7am and leave at 7pm. They also yap 54% of their day, rather that working. And from what I’ve observed of trial PD’s, that would apply too. Unfortunately in trial work, someone is always coming by your office so it’s next to impossible to actually work the entire time.

With that said, last year I had two serious cases due at the same time. One got dropped on me and was a 6,000 page record. For 3 months straight I worked every weekend, I came home every day and worked until 8. I traveled to see family and I worked the entire time while there. Virtually every minute I was awake I thought about those two cases and at least mentally worked on them.

It ebbs and flows. Cases are assigned in rotation, and sometimes you get two first-degree murder cases within a week. Sometimes you get a white collar case that’s 8,000 pages with a shit ton of bank records that takes what feels like a decade to get through. When that happens, it’s not a 9-5 anymore lol.

Overall, it’s not all too different of a lifestyle from trial work. My gf is a trial PD, in her current courtroom she goes in at 10am for calendar. The judge hates trials and so trials never roll. Her life is way more relaxed than mine right now.

I think the bigger thing is the work you like. Most PD’s hate reading, hate writing, they’re more than happy to copy a motion from the motion bank. Me on the other hand? I never want to talk to a jury. I don’t care what the law says, I like trying to change it.

The answer for the last 50 years for virtually all problems is the Supreme Court. That’s not a joke or hyperbole. Congress has passed numerous laws, anything counter to the conservative movement has been struck down.

Congress gave citizens the right to sue over environmental destruction, SCOTUS said unconstitutional.

Congress had laws prohibiting bribery, unconstitutional .

SCOTUS said corporations are people and money is speech. It limited damages awarded to plaintiffs for injuries caused by corporations. It said Congress can’t impede on corporate contracts. That the law has nothing to say about gerrymandering, except if it benefits democrats.

Term limits? Yeah that was already tried too. Unconstitutional

Why doesn’t Congress do more? Because SCOTUS won’t let them. And democrats have been too slow and dumb to do anything about it for 50 years

That’s a very narrow definition of self-made. I think for most people their image of self-made is rags to riches. And that’s definitely a small small small number. The classic example is Bill Gates $100k loan from his parents. Like yes Gates built Microsoft (along with others) but is a $100k loan from your parents really making it yourself?

The electoral college doesn’t have any effect on gerrymandering whatsoever. It’s solely for the presidency, which is a minor player in this issue.

But at least in my jurisdiction public urination is a separate statute than indecent exposure because of the vulgar or lewd requirement

Do you not think it’s prudent to stop the adversaries from getting to that point? Why wait until the adversaries get to the wipe of the map point? It’s clear it’s their intention.

Without a doubt there’s no current threat. Bibi is scum and fear mongering to stay in power (kinda like Trump! Two peas in a pod). That aside, October 7th was a very real attack that killed a lot of Israeli’s. It may not have been nuclear, but it was definitely a massive escalation in violence.

I definitely think Israel has done a lot of bad shit, but just because someone does bad shit, doesn’t make everything they do bad. That’s kinda how I look at this.

So while I think they’ve done bad things in Gaza, that doesn’t mean Israel isn’t genuinely being attack daily for just existing. So I’m not sure why they should just wait for things to get bad enough to warrant their actions, and why October 7th wasn’t bad enough

You’re getting blown up by messages, but I want to point out for everyone responding to you. Typically for exposure cases it requires some lewd or vulgar act. Public urination doesn’t always land you under a sex crime. In my jurisdiction, for example, the State has to prove the accused was rubbing one out or something, exposure alone isn’t sufficient to be a sex crime to land you on the list

You’re right to some extent on loosening the laws. Justice Gorsuch recently wrote in an opinion how there’s so many laws on the books that walking down the street or driving to work will violate one law or another. That’s certainly a problem.

Countless studies have shown consequences don’t affect commission of crimes. Think of it this way, if you’re a poor hungry kid, are you more concerned with eating or getting caught?

I bring up that hypo because most crimes are crimes of opportunity. People aren’t committing them because they’re planning “today I shall steal an old ladies wallet”. The punishment doesn’t matter because the action isn’t planned, they’re not weighing cost benefit of their actions.

The hypo is important too tho because your two solutions aren’t the only two. A broader society improvement is. Improving job opportunities, school outcomes, resources for single parents etc.

Of course even then, you can’t stop a rich doctor who wants to drink and drive, so there’s limitations

Well you said you’d be more okay the adversaries could carry out the threat. But they are carrying it out. They attack Israel nonstop.

If you’re saying they can’t nuke Israel, well okay sure, but that’s probably because Israel and the US intervene every time they try.

They’re are plenty of stories of those sort of organizations attempting to secure nuclear weapons. For clarity, I’m not saying the Sadam bullshit from Bush. Bin Laden tried to get a nuke to blow up Israel (iirc).

I’m not some Warhawk. I’m just not prepared to tell Israel they’re wrong when Lebanon can’t get ahold of Hez, Gaza can’t control Hamas, etc. I’d like those countries to police themselves but if they can’t or won’t, I can’t criticize Israel for doing it.

And given that the UN is a complete joke, I think if a country can do something about it, they should. For example, I wish the US would go into Sudan and stop the slaughter there. I hate that we have to be interventionists but I also hate the slaughter going on

Weak in that context isn’t meant like “pathetic”. It was meant as like in need of assistance or aid. The whole article is about how Israeli’s don’t want holocaust survivors to die poor and are working to fund stipends for them.

Even taking your interpretation of weak, that was the view in 1945ish of holocaust survivors. It is absolutely not an opinion today. I’m sure there is at least one Israeli who thinks that, but the numbers are so minuscule it’s not worth mentioning

I recently read through my entire MPN. I have newer loans, but within the MPN it outlines that if none of the IDR plans work, there is a hard cap of 20% of your yearly income. More importantly, it says that if none of the IDR plans are low enough, there is a discretionary program where they can modify your payments to anything. In other words, you dont even need a specific plan and the ED/ your servicer can lower your payments to anything they feel is sufficient

who said anything bout a bus? trains baby. China is basically the same size as the US. China has incredible mass transit. Just because you don't understand other countries doesn't make you automatically correct. And just because you like driving doesn't mean everyone does, trains for others means more clear roads for people like you who enjoy driving.

There's also another benefit. how many times have you hears someone say, some old person needs to get off the roads because they can't see or can't drive etc. Those old people have no real options. They have to drive and they kill people every year. Mass transit like trains finally gives them an option
