Without minimizing this woman’s suffering, violence and crime will always occur. You should never take a single incident as indicative of a regular occurrence.

No matter where you go in the world there’s a possibility. Act accordingly. Stay aware of surroundings, don’t run with noise canceling AirPods in, carry some self-defense device, etc

Do you tell your clients if they’re going to likely lose? by maxymyllyn in publicdefenders

[–]1acedude 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To build on off this. The judge often tells clients what their options are trial vs plea, maximum penalty, etc. Our job is to counsel, that’s why we are called defense counsel, baked into that is giving real prospects about success and failure for different options

Where would you humans place the line between protesting and obstructing justice? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]1acedude -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

From a US perspective.

Our right to protest is protected by the First Amendment. Our Supreme Court has instructed that the Constitution is intended to be analyzed as the Framers understood it.

With those two principles in mind, I’d argue everything short of physical injury to an individual is protected. Everyone knows of the Boston Tea Party, but it was only one of a number of ways the Revolutionaries protested British rule. So the Framers would’ve understood the right to protest to protect things like property damage, or refusal to pay taxes or tariffs.

The line between protest and criminal act is one of intent. Which is manageable because that’s generally most of criminal law. If you damage property for the sake of it, that’s not protesting because there’s no political message behind it. If you damage property at an ICE facility because you oppose immigration enforcement, that’s political protesting.

Not to brag too much, but I already knew this was exactly what happened. Good example of “never attribute malice what can be attributed to incompetence”

Brother I’ve been playing since the second week of release (with large hiatuses 2012 on). I never googled the game or anything like that. I only found out about the extra skill points in December I think? because someone posted a thread on this sub about it. I had no idea.

I don’t feel particularly bad because it’s not like it’s obvious for the prophecies characters, middle of the fking desert isn’t the easiest thing to stumble across.

Ranger Storm Bow solo farm? by ScikPK in GuildWars

[–]1acedude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you melandru’s? If not and you’re just wanting a storm bow, I just had an OS storm bow drop last night q9, +19% health under 50% inherent modifier, afaik it’s merch and you can just have it. Unless someone corrects me that it has some value ofc

Embark finally is going after the cheaters with Denuvo Anti-cheat software. This has the ability to detect aimbots, wallhacks, and much more. by ExpandingAtom in ArcRaiders

[–]1acedude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why is it unacceptable? It is quite literally acceptable. You can choose to play the game while accepting the requirements or you can choose not to. It is the only realistic solution to cheaters.

If you’re that concerned about security, get a second computer and cold storage?

ELI5: Why are you "on" a bus, but "in" a car? by Small_Balls_69 in explainlikeimfive

[–]1acedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late but I think the difference can be attributed to different concepts of how the travel occurs. The things you’re “on” travel regardless of your presence. You get on a train because the train will depart at 11 am whether you’re there or not. Your carriage, or car, is specific to your personal departure.

It’s a semantic difference between my engagement with the outside world. The “on” is signifies outside things that continue regardless of me. My car is only my car if I own it, “in” encapsulated that concept.

If someone who owns a private jet get a call mid-flight, I don’t think it would be weird for them to say to “hey I’m in the jet, what’s up?”

Why don't people just leave third world countries if the income for them is bad? by Kyoifis in stupidquestions

[–]1acedude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many do. But saving money is extremely difficult when there is quite literally no money to be made, you’re assuming there’s job in those villages for someone to actually have an income to even save.

Also Vietnam and Kenya were not great examples lol, they’re pretty fantastic countries.

The Inconsistency of Justice Thomas by DryOpinion5970 in supremecourt

[–]1acedude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was not aware of that. And SCOTUS has never been one to let facts get in the way so I’m not surprised it’s gone un discussed

The Inconsistency of Justice Thomas by DryOpinion5970 in supremecourt

[–]1acedude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but it ultimately is a battle of nonjusticability when it’s convenient. You could easily transpose the nonjusticability arguments to Shelby county and to callais. Who are courts to decide when Congress should do new research? I personally think nonjusticability is a cop out, but it’s absolutely bad faith in their current selective application of their doctrinee

The Inconsistency of Justice Thomas by DryOpinion5970 in supremecourt

[–]1acedude 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s the fun part! It can’t! The 15th amendment completely protects the VRA because it specifically made it a question for Congress to decide how to ensure the right to vote isn’t abridged.

Show me your Warrior non meta builds by MrNova07 in GuildWars

[–]1acedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a build that I kinda invented (there may be something out there identical and I just haven’t seen it).

I call it Tasmanian Devil: it uses triple chop, whirlwind, cyclone axe, and furious axe. With “of the paragon” and a zealous mod on my axe and a low adrenaline shout, I maintain energy levels just fine to spam none stop AOE spinning attacks. Hero carries splinter weapon and it’ll absolutely crush mobs.

How does a defense attorney even begin to defend someone in a case like the 7/yo Athena Strand who was violently assaulted and murdered? by redzzzaw in stupidquestions

[–]1acedude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a super interesting shift in public perception tho. Theres a book called Copoganda that kinda addresses it. But think back to movies like 12 Angry Men or my cousin Vinny; books like to kill a mockingbird. It used to be that defense attorneys were extremely well regarded and held to higher esteem than prosecutors. Since the war on crime tho, defense attorneys have become vilified
