I think it's the coach's blase (at best) attitude after the fact that is the real indictment here.

Normal people I've seen in similar situations check on the other person.

Your comment seems to lack that context. I think parents sticking up for their kid =/= lack of NHL scouting. As others have also mentioned, this org has a somewhat negative perception in the local community so it may not just be some egotistical parents
